On Topic Discussion 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The case count is now over 100 in the US.

The concern about the virus spreading in the Washington State long-term care facility appears to be warranted. Washington health officials say that there are 18 cases in their state and that 6 of the 18 patients have died.

California also has 18 cases.

11 states in the US have reported infections for a total of 52 patients. The US cases from the Diamond Princess are reported separately.

Washington State Governor Jay Inslee held a press conference on the afternoon of March 2, 2020. Not at all informative!

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

I don't think its as big a deal as the media is playing it. Are you worried?

Well, Mikey. I guess your conjecture was 1000% off-base. It's that pesky media, darn it! They Finally got something right, eh?

I think the coronavirus got him. He hasn't been around in awhile.

Ah well. I just HADDA say that, since I used to be "The Media" about 40 years ago when I was a reporter for the New Haven Register. Of course, back then, the media were respected. And they didn't fuck up the way some of the current media does. I can't imagine Walter Cronkite making statements like any of the current anchors interject into the news. That's why people respected Cronkite. His expression remained neutral.
So, we don't know the "411" on Mikey-"2001: A-Space-Odyssey"-3000???

Come home, Mikey. All is forgiven!!!!

Yikes! Let me correct myself: I was "the Media" almost 50 years ago! I'm so old I can't count anymore! I was barely 21 when i made reporter status. Ah, those were the days. The Black Panthers trial in New Haven in 1971. HISTORY in the making!

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

China is reporting just over 100 new cases today. It's amazing how their numbers have been dramatically reduced in recent weeks. The draconian measures they have enforced on their citizens are working, if their stats are accurate. The question is, would citizens in the West be prepared to put up with similar measures in order to reduce transmissions? Probably not.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

as the US death toll rises, the CDC has removed the "total number tested" for the virus from their website
It will be interesting to see what they give as the reason but they've been under fire because the testing kits were found to have a flaw, which puts the accuracy of the results in question. We're also about to see the tests move to outside labs, so the CDC will no longer be able to give a number of tests since all tests won't be going through the CDC Atlanta lab.

US Health and Human Services (HHS) evacuated Americans out of China and quarantined them at military bases in the US. One of the places that house evacuees was Lackland Air Force base near San Antonio. The evacuees there are housed in a hotel on the base and they are being evaluated, fed and clothed by a private company that HHS was trained to handle medical quarantined patients.
There was a report today that one of the San Antonio evacuees was released after testing negative. After release, that person tested positive. Today is the 14th day of quarantine for all of the San Antonio evacuees, so it's now unclear whether 14 days of quarantine are sufficient (and this adds to the questions about whether the tests that were done were reliable).

... The question is, would citizens in the West be prepared to put up with similar measures in order to reduce transmissions? Probably not.
No and that's going to be an issue if the current trends in California and Washington state continue.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

I trust that this isn't going to be a repeat of the Spanish Flu of 1918 (no offense, our Mr. Belamo). Sure, it's scary, but I am not losing sleep, losing sleep, or worse, walking around on in a Hazmat suit. This is not nonchalance per se, but we just not governed by fear, fret, and fraught over this. WI has one confirmed case, but that is way down south where they probably talk with a drawl. My son and I still practice frequent hand washing, him more than me, especially at school (and they promote hand sanitizer).

I still shake people's hands and hug, but I don't immediately bring my hand to face afterwards. If this gets worse, of course, we will take more drastic action, but I, we refuse to submit to paranoia and hysteria at this time.

If not you're an older person or you have a chronic health condition, your are more likely to either not know you have been exposed or you may have a really bad cold.

Older people and people with chronic health conditions are always at risk during flu season. They are more likely to develop pneumonia from COVID-19. This is just one more condition for them to avoid. Worry about your older relatives.

You might want to reconsider handshakes in general. Hand-to-hand contact has always been a bad idea. Fist bumps or elbow bumps are probably a better option, especially during the winter.

Bro hugs are usually brief enough to be low risk. If the person you're considering hugging is ill, then it's never good idea to hug them.

If you see people sneezing or coughing and covering it with their hand or worse, not covering it at all, teach them about coughing into their elbow and encourage them to wash their hands (and go home!).

Yes, and as one of the more 'senior' members on here, I'm not big on the habit of hugging and kissing people I don't know. Of course, you can catch something from anyone, but still, the habit of every gay man hugging the first time they meet? Not for me. I only hug where there is affection (and that takes time). Of course, anyone my age could hug a grandchild and catch the flu. I've had it once in my life. I can't imagine what it's like to get it once every 5 years even! Good thing I'm a recluse living on top of a mountain (not really, just joshing), but here in Connecticut, I don't socialize a whole lot. Now, if I was still living in San Francisco, where i knew quite a few people, I'd be at much greater risk. But I'm not.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Lots of panic buying here, stores empty of hand sanitizer, paper towels, toilet paper, cold medicine etc.

Price gouging.

Is that going on everywhere?

I'm already a misanthropist. This sort of behavior just makes me pissier.

After New Zealand's first case, everyone went out and emptied the supermarket shelves of toilet paper and bottles water. As if the country's water supply will stop because of coronavirus???? There are no masks for sale anywhere.

Bruce Aylward, World Health Organization Joint Mission to China:

"I think the key learning from China is speed — it’s all about the speed. The faster you can find the cases, isolate the cases, and track their close contacts, the more successful you’re going to be. [...]

People keep saying [the cases are the] tip of the iceberg. But we couldn’t find that. We found there’s a lot of people who are cases, a lot of close contacts — but not a lot of asymptomatic circulation of this virus in the bigger population. And that’s different from flu. [...]

China got patients in treatment early and have highly sophisticated health care treatment procedures. They are really good at keeping people alive with this disease. They have a survival rate (with a mortality rate of just under 1% outside of Hubei province) for this disease I would not extrapolate to the rest of the world. What you’ve seen in Italy and Iran is that a lot of people are dying.

Panic and hysteria are not appropriate. This is a disease that is in the cases and their close contacts. It’s not a hidden enemy lurking behind bushes. Get organized, get educated, and get working."

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Housewares convention in Chicago, scheduled to start Saturday the 14th of March, has been cancelled.

$77 million in direct spending over 4 days, 60,000 attendees not going to Chicago.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/ne...anceled-over-coronavirus-concerns/ar-BB10HF8N

The Ace Hardware show, scheduled to end the same day the Housewares show started, is still on, for now, but only about 20,000 attendees for that one.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

stupid or no so stupid question:
Can you boil your face mask and reuse? meaning the virus are killed.

Commercial facemasks are single-use and are intended to be disposable. They're composed of a fiber composite that is not woven, so it is unlikely to survive boiling.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

4-Mar-2020:

    Oregon - 3
    Rhode Island - 2
    Washington state - 27 (includes 9 fatalities)
    Wisconsin - 1
  • The Washington state cases (including the 9 deaths) are mostly connected to a long term care facility in Kirkland, Washington.
  • Bizarre epidemiological trivia: the new North Carolina case is someone who had visited the long term care facility in Washington.
  • An employee at an Amazon facility in Seattle has tested positive. The employee left work sick on 25-Feb but was not tested until this week.

Netherlands:
Just to give some perspective on what is happening outside of China.... on 8-Feb, Harke had commented that the Netherlands had no COVID19 cases reported. On February 27-Feb, the Netherlands reported their first COVID-19 case. As of this morning, 6 days later, they're reporting 38 cases.
