North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said that the country's COVID-19 outbreak is a "great disaster," the BBC reported, citing state media.
"The spread of the malignant epidemic is [the greatest] turmoil to fall on our country since the founding," in 1948, Kim said during an emergency meeting on Saturday, according to state news agency KCNA.
North Korea said on Saturday that there had been over half a million cases of "fever" in recent weeks, just two days after claiming to have found its first ever COVID case and imposing a national lockdown.
The new figure marked an increase from the estimated 350,000 cases reported on Friday.

It's probably higher than the official numbers. Under pressure from the Press, the US government sent 3 at-home tests to any US household that requested one. They also required insurance companies to cover the cost of at-home tests. At home results aren't reported in the official case numbers.
We are seeing some small surges on the east coast, involving one of the new omicron variants that is even more contagious than the last omicron variant. It's expected that there will be another surge in the southeast during peak tourism and vacation season after July 4th and it will continue into the new school year.
North Korea would probably benefit from ten to fifteen percent of its people dying off since it has more people that it has the resources to support except at subsistence level.
I would be careful about talking about how the world would benefit from a reduction in population. Have you noticed that the people making those pronouncements seem to assume that they will not be among the ones being culled?
Smallpox, cowpox, horsepox, monkeypox... all orthopoxviruses. All cause similar disease in different species of mammals....Never heard of it. Hears of smallpox and chickenpox, but not monkeypox. Nowhere near as transmissible as COVID, but just wonder what other 'surprises' Mother Nature has in store for us.
