On Topic Discussion 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

Is there another booster coming? It's getting harder and harder to avoid being around infected people; too many don't seem to care at all if they spread disease.

Though I heard a good one:

Wear a Mask: it's a condom for your mouth.
 
Some stats on deaths and hospitalizations in the US:

The US remains the epicenter of the pandemic with over 1,000,000 new cases of COVID-19 per week. Over 400 Americans die every day of COVID-19.

Weekly hospitalizations were highest the week of 29-Jan-2022 where there were 131,627 hospitalizations during the peak of the BA.1/BA.2 omicron surge. Hospitalizations had dropped to 10,480 the week of 16-Apr-2022. Since the new omicron variants have spread in the past couple of months, weekly hospitalizations have been increasing again.

The weeks with highest death rate were 19-Jan-2022 during the omicron BA.1/BA.2 surge with 17,970 that week (2,567 deaths per day) and the week of 25-Sep-2021 during the Delta surge when 14,268 people died (2,038 per day).

Since the two surges, 300-400 deaths per day has become the norm.

I got an email notice from AARP yesterday that seemed to suggest that those who are over sixty and more than four months past the last booster shouldn't wait for the new booster but go request another shot. Is there any point to doing that?

The recommendation is to get the booster if it has been 4 months since your last booster. Surges seem to happen after holidays. This means that Dec-Jan will likely be the next surge. If you get your booster now, this will mean that you would be eligible if they recommend another booster for Nov-Dec.

Because BA.5 is a significant mutation from the 2019 virus that was used to make the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, it is likely that there will be a new formula for the vaccine that will be avialable and we're hoping that version comes out around the end of 2022.
 
My last booster was November 2021, so I will see about getting another. With all the unvaccinated/half-vaccinated, I'm sure the next wave will be a little worse than people think.

Okay, my last booster was 4/5/22, so I have a few weeks to wait.

I think a recent announcement here finally woke some people up -- the county health people put out a warning about the new variants as did the local health system (Adventist Health runs most medical facilities in the county), and I noticed today that a lot more people were wearing masks.

The mini-epidemics we've seen in Washington DC are a good demonstration of what we'll see.

During the Trump Administration, we saw a lot of unvaccinated public officials got very sick - like Rudy Giuliani and Chris Christie who both ended up in the hospital, Ben Carson (who ended up in the ICU), Trump (who came pretty close to ending up on a ventilator).

During the Biden Administration, most of the Democrats in the Congress and White House have been vaccinated and boosted. One by one, they are testing positive for omicron but their experience has been a few days in isolation with mild symptoms (Harris, Pelosi, Schumer, Warren, et al). Even Biden, who is 79 years old and has a history of asthma seems to have mild symptoms but he has been put on Paxlovid as a precaution to reduce his risk of hospitalization.

A vaccine and those antibody levels do make a difference in keeping people out of the hospital, particularly people who have risk factors like asthma, diabetes and conditions that affect the immune system.

You're pretty close to the 4 months.

The numbers I'm seeing from the epidemiologists are pretty amazing in terms of the number of cases - it's probably 1,000,000 new cases per day now but so far, the hospitalizations are low and it seems to be the unvaccinated and high risk patients who are being hospitalized. The well has been so poisoned over the mask issue and the public seems to be oblivious to the spread of BA.4 and BA.5, so public health alerts have been very muted.

My suspicion is the hospitalizations are tied to this statistic:
  • 4th dose: - 12,451,941 (up from 12,137,078 / +314,863) - 35.2% of US population >65 yo

I got all my shots but so far I know three people - all friends of mine - who got covid anyway but they are all fine now.

I am not taking my mask off anytime soon - probably not until it is over. I don't care if other people wear them or not (but I think they are idiots to ignore the circumstances that exist) - I can't control what they do anyway and I don't want to so as long as I have a mask on and all my shots my risk of getting it again is much much lower.

Update: UK has approved the bivalent vaccine tha includes mRNA for both the original Wuhan strain spike and the omicron spike:

That's excellent news. The CNN piece says it's undecided who will qualify for a booster, but it actually appears to have been decided that it will be given to:

1) health and social care staff,

2) everyone aged 50 and over,

3) carers who are over the age of 16,

4) people over five whose health puts them at greater risk, this includes pregnant women and

5) people over five who share a house with somebody with a weakened immune system.

That's very similar to the recommendation for second boosters.

The current recommendation for the second booster is people age 50 and older, or immunocompromised people who are age 12 and older.

So, the current recommendation is:
  • Two prime doses for everyone 6 months and older.
  • A five month booster for everyone age 5 and older.
  • A second five month booster for age 50 and older, or immuncompromised age 12 and older.

It wouldn't surprise me if the US treats the bivalent shot as a booster and uses the same recommendation as the current second booster.

The bivalent booster has been approved in the US. This booster contains both the original SARS-COV-2 mRNA, as well as mRNA for the omicron BA.1 variant. The dominant strain in the US (89% of infections) is omicron BA.5 but the studies show the new bivalent vaccine is more effective against these newer omicron strains.

As before, two manufacturers are available - Pfizer(Comirnaty) and Moderna.

If you have completed the primary series of two shots, you are eligible for a booster of the new bivalent vaccine.

If you are current on your previous boosters, you can receive another booster dose of the bivalent booster at least two months after the last dose of any Covid-19 vaccine or at least three months after a COVID-19 infection.

I've had both boosters, so I think I'm going to wait until about mid-October to get it (and the flu shot), so I am better covered for the holidays.

That's a good strategy. If past is prologue, we usually see surges in cases immediately following holidays. November-January is when having high antibody levels is going to be beneficial.
 
To date, nearly 1/3 of the US population has had COVID-19. One of the more scary statistics is that one in five of these COVID-19 survivors report some long-term symptom after their infection. It's called "long COVID" and about 1:13 Americans may be affected.

Healthcare professionals started with the expectation that survivors from the early infections in 2020 could have issues with breathing and problems with their lungs. This proved incorrect. Psychological and mental functioning seems to be the biggest problem with symptoms varying from "brain fog" to severe incapacitation that requires specialized physical therapy. Early research shows that vaccination does lower the risk of long COVID but not by as much as hoped. The good news is that the studies are reporting that patients with healthy immune systems who are getting boosters are showing reduced incidence of long COVID-19.,
