COVID-19 stats:
Cases reported: 76,775 (up from 75,752 yesterday)
Cases reported in the US - 16 (up from 15 yesterday, for reporting, they have separated the 14 Diamond Princess cases again)
Cases reported in Canada - 9 (up from 8 yesterday- new case in BC in woman who had recently traveled to Iran. There are also 47 Canadians on the Diamond Princess who tested positive)
Deaths: 2,247 (up from 2,130 yesterday

China changed the way that they report "cases", again. They are now reporting "confirmed cases" and "suspected cases" separately.

China also disclosed that they had 512 cases inside their prison system.

13 more cases were diagnosed on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, bringing the total number of cases on the ship to 639.

The number of cases in South Korea went from 28 a week ago to at 156.

The underlying truth here is that there are two really dirty places on the human body- the hands and the anus. The hands are worse by far. Anything that comes in contact with your hands- armrests, tray tables, keyboards/mice, etc- pick up the bacteria from your hands and fingers.

The reason toilet seats are not as bad as we think is that we don't put our assholes on the seat- usually just the upper part of the legs. Since the upper leg is covered and doesn't come in contact with other objects, it's not particularly dirty, so the seat doesn't get particularly dirty either.

A couple of press items that came out from the CDC today that put things into perspective.

COVID-19 Updates:
The CDC is reporting the US cases that were diagnosed in the US separately from those that were diagnosed abroad. According to this new standard, there are 34 cases in the US:
  • 21 cases were diagnosed outside the US (18 of the 21 cases came from the Diamond Princess cruise ship) and the patient has been relocated to the US;
  • 13 cases were diagnosed in the US. Two of these 13 cases were person-to-person transmissions that occurred in the US.
There are another 10 passengers from the Diamond Princess who have tested positive but have not been added to the 34 cases pending confirmatory testing. If these are confirmed, the number will increase to 44 cases.

Overnight, the number of US cases increased by 1. The new case is in California. Whether it was acquired in the US has not been confirmed yet.


Influenza Updates:
  • 105 children have died from influenza this flu season. This makes this flu season the second highest for childhood mortality in the past 15 years (2009 is the current record).
  • CDC estimates that so far this season there have been at least 29 million flu illnesses, 280,000 hospitalizations and 16,000 deaths from flu.
  • Interim estimates of 2019-2020 flu vaccine effectiveness were released this week. So far this season, flu vaccines are reducing doctor’s visits for flu illness by 45% overall and 55% in children.
  • Antiviral medications are an important adjunct to flu vaccine in the control of influenza. Almost all (>99%) of the influenza viruses tested this season are susceptible to the four FDA-approved influenza antiviral medications recommended for use in the U.S. this season.

I've done some interesting jobs in my life but I can't say that I have cleaned public lavatories.

  • Includes the 14 Diamond Princess cases with 10 additional cases pending confirmation
  • 1 new case has not been detailed to the media yet

Latest stats from the Diamond Princess: 634 of 3,700 passengers and crew have tested positive. 2 Japanese citizens from the Diamond Princess have died.

  • Italy has 219 cases and 5 deaths
  • Iran has 47 cases with 12 deaths.

No science to back that up. MERS is a coronavirus that has been going around in Saudi Arabia where it's always warm.

No, the rates of transmission are falling because the Chinese government has been making everyone in the affected areas stay in their homes for days on end. If you're on the street without a mask, they have drones flying around the city telling people to put on their mask and that they should be at home.

Look at the numbers in South Korea and Italy where they are just beginning to implement quarantine measures.

The cruise ship experience has shown us that this is a very contagious virus. When China lets up on their quarantine, we don't know whether the transmission rates will stay low.

Iran is finally admitting they have a problem and Iran's deputy health minister and an MP have both tested positive for the coronavirus.

If you watch their press conference yesterday, the health minister was sweating like a whore in church.

If in fact their mortality rate is 16 deaths out of 95 cases, they're running about 8 times the expected mortality rate of 2%.

Maybe countries just have to employ similar measures to China for 12 months until a vaccine can be approved? Whatever draconian measures they are using, China is showing that it is possible to contain, if their figures are correct.

The good news with this virus is that while it's far more transmissable between humans than originally reported, it does not appear to have a common non-human reservoir (at least not that they have found yet).

The reason influenza is a continual bane with constantly changing properties and nearly annual pandemics is that it moves between pigs and birds - animals that humans have frequent contact with- and then back to humans. This movement between species changes the virus and allows it to avoid our immune systems and it also prevents us from eliminating influenza in humans.

Because there doesn't seem to be a non-human reservoir for COVID-19, in theory if countries could greatly reduce or stop human to human transmission, the epidemic would be stopped.

The bad news... two problems: 1) international travel and 2) countries like the US don't respond to government mandates well. Trying to force Americans to stay and home, not get paid for weeks and forcing healthcare workers to risk contracting the virus... well, that probably won't work.
