On Topic Discussion 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Yesterday, there were some reports leaking out of Iran that COVID-19 had gotten into their prison system. The Iran government denied the reports. Today, this story just hit the news:

Iran to temporarily free 54,000 prisoners as coronavirus spreads [CNN]
Iran will temporarily release 54,000 people from prisons and deploy hundreds of thousands of health workers as officials announced a slew of measures to contain the world's deadliest coronavirus outbreak outside China.

Iran reported on Wednesday that its death toll had risen to 92, as 586 new cases were reported overnight, bringing the total up to 2,922, state media reported.

The country has come under pressure to take more action against the virus after Iraq, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain reported cases with links to the Iranian city of Qom, where several holy sites are regularly visited by large crowds.

Lots of panic buying here, stores empty of hand sanitizer, paper towels, toilet paper, cold medicine etc.

Price gouging.

Is that going on everywhere?
Not sure where you're situated, z, but yep, same here in Australia. It's bloody ridiculous, actually! :telstra:

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

It's a little weird but Jon Oliver's report on coronavirus has some good information, in addition to being funny. If you don't want to get into the political discussion, you can drop off after the first 10 minutes).

I'm already a misanthropist. This sort of behavior just makes me pissier.

Panic buying is here in the UK. No hand gels available. I have seen gels that normally sell for under £1, selling for £19 on ebay.

Paracetamol is also selling quick. I have seen some stores doubling the prices.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The way this thing seems to be popping up out nowhere, I'm starting to wonder if has been around here longer than we know, and we're just becoming aware due to testing, that it isn't the flu or some other respiratory virus?

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

I'm beginning to appreciate how the virus in Italy has got out of hand. An North Italian lady flew into NZ, began to feel unwell but decided to fly down from Auckland to a town near Wellington anyway, meet up with people and flew back to Auckland. And then she walked into 2 different medical centres with no mask. And now we find she has coronavirus.

Just goes to show that whatever is going on around them, some people continue to live in their own little world.

Eh, it isn't popping up out of nowhere. I'm hoping it's close enough to the virus I got a few years ago that I shouldn't have too much trouble fighting it off. Last one had me in bed for well over 3 weeks. And that's not counting the 'huh, I can move/breath again' recovery time. Not an experience I care to repeat.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Hand sanitizer at Acme (Philadelphia's longtime favorite supermarket chain) was buy one get one free this week. Needless to say, it's sold out.

Three things to know about COVID19 that answer your question:
  1. From the mass testing in South Korea, we've learned that a lot of people have the virus long before they show symptoms, like fever.
  2. There is a population of people who test positive for the virus and who have minimal symptoms and who may never feel sick. This means they're out in the community and can be passing along the virus without realizing it.
  3. The things that we were told about the virus early on- that it isn't transmitted in human to human contact, that it has an incubation less than 14 days and that it has an R0 of 2- these were all assumptions that were made early and we're finding these were bad assumptions.

Until last week, the CDC was the only lab testing for the virus. On their website, they indicated that they had processed a little over 400 test kits. There's over 300 million people in the US, so 400 test kits is pitiful.

South Korea has 51 million people. Because they have been mass testing everyone possible, they are reporting 5,766 cases.

What is about to happen is that testing is going to be available first in state labs then widely available in commercial labs.

Today, if you go to a hospital with an upper respiratory infection, they swab your nose and the hospital lab runs testing for influenza-A, influenza-B, MERS, SARS, etc- up to 20 or more viruses, but not COVID19, yet. When COVID19 gets added to that testing panel, you can expect that we're going to see the number of cases in the US explode from the 108 cases that we're currently reporting.

By popping up out of nowhere I mean with no traceable exposure. Therefore, it appears to have popped up out nowhere. Obviously, it didn't come literally out of nowhere. It's the same analogy as when you're driving and another car "just comes out of nowhere" and you must suddenly hit the brakes. It didn't literally materialize from thin air. You just didn't see it. That experience happens to everyone, I think.

Those illnesses are horrible I know. I hope you don't get this one.

When the news reports said Bergen County and that he had been hospitalized since 3-March, I suspected it was at HUMC since that's the trauma center for that region.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

So Jim Bakker has been served a cease and desist order for his ridiculous claims about his bogus 'silver' solution possibly curing Coronavirus.

Why this fucker isn't still in jail for fraud just baffles me.

The New York State Office of the Attorney General (“OAG”) is extremely concerned by certain statements made during the February 12, 2020 screening of The Jim Bakker Show. During this screening, you asked your guest Sherrill Sellman if the Silver Solution sold on the show’s website would be effective against the coronavirus, to which Ms. Sherman responded: “Let‘s say it hasn’t been tested on this strain of the coronavirus, but it’s been tested on other strains of the coronavirus and has been able to eliminate it within 12 hours.”

Fun opinion,
isn't these numbers show how close these countries are to China in terms of relationship with China?
