Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

^The insane shit that I've seen lately blossoming in the wake of the disease is repellant... a Chinese man being sprayed with Febreze on the NYC subway ... people blaming "sin" ... cow-piss drinking parties ... Jim Bakker goes without saying.

 I'm sorry, that sounds like something out of a John Waters movie.

I am REALLY not looking forward to having pneumonia-like symptoms if I catch this.... I had something like that back in 2017 and it was horrible.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Housewares convention in Chicago, scheduled to start Saturday the 14th of March, has been cancelled.

$77 million in direct spending over 4 days, 60,000 attendees not going to Chicago.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/ne...anceled-over-coronavirus-concerns/ar-BB10HF8N

The Ace Hardware show, scheduled to end the same day the Housewares show started, is still on, for now, but only about 20,000 attendees for that one.

As of Thursday afternoon (March 5), the Ace Hardware convention in Chicago scheduled to start March 12 has now been cancelled. And Colorado now has two 'Presumptive Positive' cases. And you can't buy a bottle of hand sanitizer hardly anywhere--but you can find soap!!! Toilet paper is also in short supply.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

As of Thursday afternoon (March 5), the Ace Hardware convention in Chicago scheduled to start March 12 has now been cancelled.
HIMSS, an annual convention of healthcare information technology professionals, has also been canceled- the first time it has been canceled in its 58 year history. It was scheduled to start on Monday in Orlando. Between 40,000 and 50,000 from 90+ countries typically attend the conference.

Trump was scheduled to speak at the conference.

The conference organizers cited concerns about COVID-19 as the reason for the last minute cancellation.

From the New York Times:

"Sense of crisis deepens in U.S. as worldwide cases approach 100,000.
The U.S. Coast Guard rushed testing kits to a cruise ship quarantined off the coast of California on Thursday as the number of new cases and deaths related to the coronavirus in the United States continued to rise.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

I talked with associates in Milan yesterday AM and they said the reason northern Italy has so many cases is that more people have been tested than in any other European country. They said a lot of people are telecommuting and while the autostrada, streets and caffès aren't quite deserted one is aware of fewer cars and people. They trusted the situation was under control--adding that this was Milan, after all, and wouldn't venture the same opinion regarding anyplace south of Florence.

A couple of videos about how South Korea is doing their mass-testing program:

Although reading case reports in European countries, at the moment most cases are people who have recently visited Northern Italy.

5-Mar-2020:

United States - now in 15 states:
  • There is another cruise ship being held off the California coast for possible quarantine.

Results are in from the 46 people who were tested on the Grand Princess cruise ship which is being held offshore from California. 21 of the 46 tests were positive. This includes 19 crew members and 2 passengers.

A passenger who disembarked on an earlier segment of the cruise tested positive which led to the quarantine of the ship.

No word yet on what the plan is to deal with the passengers and crew on the ship. Yesterday, a DHS official admitted that the US has no available capacity to quarantine that many people. They haven't said how many people are on the ship but the maximum capacity of the ship is 3,100 people.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

^ but we can detain thousands of immigrants at the border

The Walmart by me was fully stocked with toilet paper, paper towels, and bleach but had just a few containers of Clorox wipes.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

What has happened in China with virtually stopping transmission must surely give the rest of the world hope. Now we wait and see what happens in Italy after implementing similar but not as wide ranging measures today.

In some way, the China experience is what is spooking the markets. The prospect of other countries confining citizens to their homes for weeks and shutting down factories and companies where work cannot be done from home would crippled the economies of poorer countries.

China May Be Beating the Coronavirus, at a Painful Cost [NY Times]
The economy has ground to a near standstill, and many small businesses say they may soon run out of cash. Patients with critical illnesses are struggling to find timely care, and some have died. Hundreds of millions of people have been placed in some form of isolation. As of Friday, about 827,000 people remained under quarantine in Beijing, according to the state-run China Daily newspaper...

For China, the numbers are key.

The number of cases reported on Saturday was a substantial decline from two and a half weeks ago, when China was recording around 2,000 new infections and as many as 100 deaths a day. Twenty-eight new deaths were reported on Saturday, all in Hubei...

The impact of the restrictions has been felt most acutely in Hubei, where 56 million people have been effectively penned in since January. For more than five weeks, the typically bustling hub of universities, commerce and transportation has been transformed into a collection of ghost towns as the virus has ravaged communities, ensnared entire families and infected thousands of medical workers.

China’s experience combating the virus has also highlighted the risk of family transmission if hospitals run out of beds and testing kits, as they did in Wuhan, where for weeks, many who were sick were sent home and infected their relatives.

Roadblocks have sealed off cities, public transportation has been shut down and private cars have been mostly banned from the roads. In Wuhan, restrictions on individual movement have been stepped up in recent weeks, with residents now mostly barred from leaving their homes.

Among residents in Hubei, there are signs that anger and frustration are mounting. Chinese social media sites are flooded with posts from residents saying they have lost their jobs because of the extended lockdown, making it difficult to make payments on mortgages and loans. Others have described food shortages in their communities.

I'd much rather Chinas measures though than letting the virus run rampant. The economy will come back.

And someone concerned about public health would absolutely agree.

There's a separate thread over in CE&P that is discussing how this fits into politics. Right now- and it's sad to say this- it's an election year in the US and we have a White House is doesn't have much to run on other than an over-valued stock market and low unemployment rate. They're putting the economy in front of American lives.... and arguably, lives across the globe.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Here's my routine for the new work week.

Each morning I logon to the Northwest Public Employee Emergency Network to see if my Agency is open or closed.
If I decide to go to work it is with the knowledge that my Agency may shut down at anytime and I will be sent home.

As a public employee I have a generous leave policy, something I never had in the private sector.
