On Topic Discussion 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

...As a public employee I have a generous leave policy, something I never had in the private sector.
There's been information in the news about Amazon and other Seattle employers telling employees to work from home.

Not much has been mentioned about what employers are requiring other employees to do- are they being paid or are they having to use paid time off?

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Panic buying in the sticks of Northern Colorado. The Toilet Paper aisle at my local Walmart on Sunday afternoon. Two other grocery stores in town (out of 12 total) were a little less sparse but not much. I still can't figure out why these post sideways, but y'all get the idea. 8-)

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

9-Mar-2020:

COVID-19 stats
Cases reported: 111,354 (up from 107,353 yesterday)
Deaths: 3,892 (up from 3,646 yesterday

Cases reported in the US - 566 (up from 436 yesterday, includes 47 Diamond Princess cases) 22 deaths

Cases reported in Canada - 64 cases (up from 60 yesterday)

Global coronavirus cases in major countries:
  • South Korea - 7,478 cases (up from 7,314 cases yesterday) - 53 deaths
  • Italy - 7,375 cases (up from 5,883 yesterday) - 366 people have died.
  • Iran - 7,161 cases (last reported 6,566 cases) - 237 deaths
  • France - 1,209 cases (up from 949 cases yesterday), 19 deaths
  • Germany - 1,151 cases (up from 939 cases yesterday)
  • UK - 280 cases (up from 209 cases yesterday), 3 deaths
  • Australia - 76 cases (up from 76 cases yesterday), 4 deaths

United States: now in 34 states and the District of Columbia
  • Several members of Congress are in self-quarantine after coming into contact with people who later tested positive for coronavirus.
  • After 21 people tested positive for the virus on the Grand Princess cruise ship off the coast of California, the government has decided to have the ship dock in Oakland. Only 46 people on the ship have been tested. The government says that it will begin moving some passengers to military bases for 14 day quarantine. Since there are over 3,000 on the ship, it's not clear how many people from the ship are being quarantined.
  • The price of oil has dropped 23% because of decreased demand globally. Interest rates on Treasury bills have dropped. The stock market is expected to have another rough day.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Business has been slow, but thankfully not dead. Most customers are reporting rational irritation with the panic and defying the fearmongering. A couple of septuagenarians simply stated they were not going to change their lives out of panic, that "they've had a good run" and dining out was an important part of their lives (which touched my crusty heart.)

Competitors who are more highly reliant on the tourist trade have been mostly empty.

A friend works in a Chinese restaurant with a split clientele, about 50% Asian and 50% not. Mostly empty. It's probably subconscious, but it's still racism. Apparently some nice old ladies came in and said they were dining there explicitly because of coronavirus and they wanted to support the Chinese community. God bless them.

In non-restaurant news, Nike apparently "disinfected" their entire 4 million square foot campus. :gogirl::rolleyes:

6-Mar-2020:

United States:
  • You will begin seeing retailers limiting purchases of certain items like toilet paper and water, as consumers have been clearing off store shelves at Walmart, Costco and other large retailers.
  • State and Federal government officials have been quietly meeting with large retailers to discuss shortages and whether limitations may be needed at the Federal level.

The psychology behind why toilet paper, of all things, is the latest coronavirus panic buy [CNN]
Masks were the first to go. Then, hand sanitizers.
Now, novel coronavirus panic buyers are snatching up ... toilet paper?
Retailers in the US and Canada have started limiting the number of toilet paper packs customers can buy in one trip. Some supermarkets in the UK are sold out. Grocery stores in Australia have hired security guards to patrol customers.
An Australian newspaper went so far as printing eight extra pages in a recent edition -- emergency toilet paper, the newspaper said, should Aussies run out.

Re: Who's afraid of Coronavirus?

Update - 22 recorded deaths, of that total 20 are in King county.

Washington State Governor Jay Inslee can't do anything, except calm an anxious public.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

COVID-19 is now in Ohio in the Cleveland area. Yesterday 3 people were diagnosed with it. They are all in their 50's and two are married and were on a Nile cruise and the other was at a conference in Washington DC, but not the one the Republicans were at. None of them contracted it in Cleveland. They don't need to be hospitalized at this time and are quarantined at home as well as six other people they were in contact with.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Japan not on the list? Looks like the country is well prepared.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Not normal that there is only one tenth of the total cases in Madrid officially recorded in Catalonia, and just 20 in BCN, even allowing for any sort of difference due to the different climate conditions. Bracing for the imminent skyrocketing

There are some weird patterns that have developed that don't have clear explanation. For example, Iran has been a hot-spot for transmission but the Turkic countries (e.g. Turkey, Armenia, Kazakhstan, etc) are border states and have very few cases. Is it climate differences or some other factor that makes the virus spread in one location but not another?

In the case of the New Rochelle cluster, the media hasn't really discussed that the cases are in a population composed largely of Orthodox Jews. Is it the congregation for religious ceremonies or family gatherings that caused 1 case to become 108 cases in a week? Or is there a genetic predisposition makes the virus more contagious in some genetic populations compared to others?

Also puzzling- children aren't being diagnosed with the virus in the same percentages as adults. Are children less susceptible or are they asymptomatic carriers?

If by the end of the week everything remains the same, you may think those who say that sunny, humid weather, that is, typical Barcelona weather, is not as good for C-19 as the cold, dry weather of most Iran or of Madrid, are right in their hypotheses.
I always associated filthy and stinky diseases to heat and humidity: maybe the next one...

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Today, Italy has 10,149 cases of the coronavirus. There are now simply too many patients for each one of them to receive adequate care. Doctors and nurses are unable to tend to everybody. They lack machines to ventilate all those gasping for air.

What is happening in Italy may happen throughout Europe and North America. Unlike China, we just can't create 1000 bed hospitals in a few weeks.

So the intensive care system will collapse... Just like is happening in Italy.

And the moral choices will have to be made. Who will be saved. Who will be allowed to die.

Depends on the robustness of each healthcare system... and, again, as we all have been pointing out, on how the virus is able to proliferate in this or that area.
