In the past 3 months, South Korea has had one of the highest COVID-19 infection rates. In the first 4 months of 2022, South Korea reported 17 million cases of COVID-19 and nearly 18,000 deaths. South Korea has 87% of its population fully vaccinated with 71% boosted.

It was just a matter of time before the virus jumped the DMZ.

North Korea has 26 million people. They are unvaccinated. The average North Korean is inches shorter than their South Korean counterparts- primarly because of malnutrition. North Korea has weak public health system and because of their isolation, they do not have treatments that are available in first world countries.

On Saturday, there were over 500,000 North Koreans with "a fever" and nineteen reported deaths.

Kim Jong Un admits North Korea's COVID-19 outbreak is a 'great disaster' [Business Insider]
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said that the country's COVID-19 outbreak is a "great disaster," the BBC reported, citing state media.

"The spread of the malignant epidemic is [the greatest] turmoil to fall on our country since the founding," in 1948, Kim said during an emergency meeting on Saturday, according to state news agency KCNA.

North Korea said on Saturday that there had been over half a million cases of "fever" in recent weeks, just two days after claiming to have found its first ever COVID case and imposing a national lockdown.

The new figure marked an increase from the estimated 350,000 cases reported on Friday.

Eric Clapton has been having a small war with concert venues that have been requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination to attend events.

Because irony is not quite dead, Clapton is having to cancel shows because he has COVID-19. Clapton is 77 years old.

Virulently anti-vax Eric Clapton tests positive for COVID [The Hill]
Eric Clapton — one of the most prominent opponents of vaccination mandates — says he’s postponing performances after testing positive for COVID-19.

The “Layla” singer announced in a Monday post on his official Facebook page that his shows planned in Zurich and Milan this week would be delayed following his diagnosis.

Clapton “is unfortunately suffering from Covid having tested positive shortly after the second concert at the Royal Albert Hall,” the post said.

It's probably higher than the official numbers. Under pressure from the Press, the US government sent 3 at-home tests to any US household that requested one. They also required insurance companies to cover the cost of at-home tests. At home results aren't reported in the official case numbers.

We are seeing some small surges on the east coast, involving one of the new omicron variants that is even more contagious than the last omicron variant. It's expected that there will be another surge in the southeast during peak tourism and vacation season after July 4th and it will continue into the new school year.

The hospital here has started requiring a test for everyone coming for any kind of outpatient treatment. And the clinic is checking temperature, pulse, and breathing of everyone who comes in.

North Korea would probably benefit from ten to fifteen percent of its people dying off since it has more people that it has the resources to support except at subsistence level.

Which extrapolated to the Western world, and then to the whole world, would give us what percentages...

And I don't mean covid or just plagues.

I would be careful about talking about how the world would benefit from a reduction in population. Have you noticed that the people making those pronouncements seem to assume that they will not be among the ones being culled?

That depends on how ragingly bitter they are

Have you noticed that people living in Garden City Europe or America, even after the experience of the past few decades, still like to assume that there are not enough suicidal bastards out there? The Israeli know better, by hard experience.

You are pointing at apocaliptic Christian weaky wackos, who would talk of the end of the world as something that would come to make for them the dirty terrorist job of cleansing out the perceived impurities of this world; yes, the impurities always being the others.

And still it is true that overpopulation will never ACTUALLY be a problem for the governments of the world :(

So, kind of off-topic, but also on-topic.

Normality returning after COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, and now media reports about this 'monkeypox' virus

Never heard of it. Hears of smallpox and chickenpox, but not monkeypox. Nowhere near as transmissible as COVID, but just wonder what other 'surprises' Mother Nature has in store for us.

/\ Mother Nature is on her deathbed because of us. Don't expect too much sympathy.

Smallpox, cowpox, horsepox, monkeypox... all orthopoxviruses. All cause similar disease in different species of mammals.

Fortunately, they're not respiratory viruses, so they are not as transmissible as COVID-19, measles and other respiratory viruses.
