… To deter the bad guys, programs like the NRA-supported "Project Exile" have been seen to work fairly well …

Cutting [criminals] off at the source, by arresting them the moment they try to buy [a gun], makes far more sense than all the current gun control laws put together.

In the context of a somewhat similar interest, I searched the NRA website earlier today and couldn’t find any definitive statement suggesting a strategy to prevent [commercially manufactured] gun ownership/possession by mentally incompetent persons. Does the NRA promote a position on this matter?

What I've gathered is that the NRA-ILA (Institute for Legislative Action) considers most state laws on the matter to be sufficient. If the Second Amendment were as honored and protected as the First, improving those might become a priority. The highest priority right now is continuing to get states to have on-demand concealed carry for law-abiding citizens (generally defined as having no more than two misdemeanors in the past five years), and getting "Castle Doctrine" and "No Retreat" laws passed. Of course right now they're putting a lot of resources into lawsuits to get other cities to conform to the Heller decision --as well as to get D.C., the city affected directly by it, to follow it!

On the matter of deputizing personnel in gun stores, I've been thinking of writing to the NRA-ILA about it. They made a big deal about the Clinton foolishness, and it would be a great way to catch felons, who still keep trying at gun stores in spite of the "instant check" system. As an Endowment Member, I have hopes they might actually listen to me.

Thanks for responding. The effort to detect mental instability seems to represent a particularly difficult challenge.

It's hard to get a legal definition of who can and can't be trusted with a firearm. Some might automatically include people with bipolar disorder -- but one of my psychiatrists, when we got on the topic of shooting one day, remarked that he knew few people less likely to abuse a firearm than me. I've actually gotten one out when faced with a possibility of needing to use it against a sub-human individual, but it felt totally wrong -- I can't wrap my mind around the concept of someone wanting to use a gun to hurt another individual.
So states generally end up forbidding firearms only to those "judged mentally incompetent", which means by a court. I'm not sure what I'd do differently, unless it would be to require psychiatrists to notify authorities any time a patient seemed to be long-term untrustworthy with weapons.

The right-wing can justify killing anyone that doesn't agree with them because they feel they have God's persmission. For example, it is rather ironic that they can justify bombing an abortion clinic in the name of God. Hmmm...murder in the name of God. A common right-wing theme. Does anyone else see the ridiculous irony and sickness in that way of thinking?

Yes, I, a right-wing Republican can and every ohter such person of similar views whom I know.. It is singularly stupid to take the view of crazies of any view and extrapolate madness to everyone who may hold conseervative views.

The whole point is the right-wing Republicans are encouraging the crazies. Or the crazies (Russ Limbaugh and company) are encouraging the right-wing Republicans. (See list above.) Name one Republican who has told Russ Limbaugh (and company) to shut the f--k up. No they just laugh and call them crazy. And the killing goes on.

No American should be calling for another American to kill an American.

In all honesty, this just might be the start of the radical Christians following the lead of the radical Muslims by actually "following God's will" by eliminating those who they feel are evil.

Infidel!!!

J/K Glaf!

Extremist religion is never a good thing. And in fairness, the Islam didn't invent this barbarism. Neither did Christianity. . . but "Christians" have been doing it for 2000 years!
