I added the Adblock plugin to my Firefox browser because them damn ads is driving me crazy! But I can't figure out how to use the darn thing. So I been surfing all over the Internet to see if there's some simple, straightforward documentation on the basics, like -- for instance -- how to block ads! Everything I've found so far, including their own website, is either almost completely lacking in information or Way Too Much Information.

Does anybody know of a good place to find just the basics? Is this thing easy to use, or do you have to do all kinds of complicated crap to make it work?

Thanks.

well it is totally simple!

you see an ad? want to get rid of it? rightlick the ad, chose "adblock", click ok .. away with it. if you see that a certain banner is in a directory you can also use wildcards
eg:
http://someserver.tld/ads/ad_monstercock.gif
change to
http://someserver.tld/ads/*
and all ads from this directory are blocked ;)
furthermore you can edit the blocklist manually from
tools -> adblock plus -> preferences.

here are some from my list (others removed due to privacy reasons ;) )

OK -- I tried that. I right clicked on a Flashplayer ad, which is the kind that drives me crazy. But all I got was the Flash menu, which of course doesn't have Adblock in it.

And what do you do with that list you showed? I've seen lists like that before. But where do you put them?

Thanks again.

It worked! I put the * right after the / after the domain name, reloaded the page and -- ad be gone!

Thanks so much eddie and corny -- can't tell you how much those wriggling ads were bugging me. On my old computer, under Windows 98, I would just keep deleting Flash Player everytime it installed itself on my computer. But under Windows XP, that doesn't seem to possible. But this works great.

I feel so empowered!

If Flash stuff was your problem, why didn't you just get Flashblock?
Didn't know about it --thanks for the link!

But in any event I'd rather be able to block ads in general. I've even blocked ads from -- well, I won't say where. ;)

WOO HOO using corny's wildcards, it also got rid of the "nauty" banners and stuff here at jub ;) i've been trying to get rid of those so that when i use my mom's computer she wouldn't see all that stuff even if i was on the message boards!

you know this could really help folks who are on dial up here also.

that is why i prefer custom filtersets.

hint hint hint: adblock is also good for blocking nasty avatars like nasty penises

but it (now) doesn't really help dialup users, because it only hides the ads. that way the page owners still get the page impressions (=money) but you don't see the ad. at least in the default setting, i am not sure if you can still set it to not download the ad, but i wouldn't do that unless you have a 56k modem or so, because the internet needs ads ;)

*offtopic* Firefox is the best. I have been using adblock for over an year now and it's the best ever invention in the history of internet :D

hum....so you custom select the nauty avatars so that one doesn't show up? interesting...does another avatar show up in it's place if the person changes it (say to a non nauty one) so you can see that one?

it should block only that certain avatar.
at least i believe so because avatar filenames are like that:
avatarUSERID_SOMENUMBER.gif
that "somenumber" seems to be the number of your avatar. eg i have a 12 (i changed often ;) ) you have a 4

That's good to know -- there's one in particular that's the grossest looking thing I've ever seen. I won't say whose avatar it is because I think it's actually his penis...

^That's unusual. Firefox is less prone to viruses than IE is.

BTW I love adblock for the same reason slobone does, and I'm sure it's the same avatar. LOL.
