African-Americans are referred to by their continent rather than their specific country of origin because due to slavery, most blacks in the United States ahd their roots and origins stripped away or hidden from them, meaning that their descendants today, while they know of their African ancestry cannot pinpoint where in Africa their ancestors came from, whereas someone coming to the U.S. today from Ghana or Somalia or Nigeria can state where they are from and would identify more with their Nigerian or Somali or Ghanaian ancestry rather than some sort of pan-African identity, and oftentimes identify themselves more with this group than with the broader African-American community as a whole. Their children however, born and raised in the U.S. may choose to identify otherwise.

White people in the U.S. are not widely called European-Americans simply because the overwhelming majority of white people know their ethnic origins and can offer a further more specific clarification and they are categorized by their country of origin. People refer to themselves with pride as Italian-American or Irish-American or Greek-American, etc. as a nod to both their ancestry and current home.

I like black guys that aren't too dark you know? I don't like it when they are nearly black. A light chestnut color is heaven for me. Anyone have that?

Even Obama isn't African-American to me, just because his late daddy was from Kenya. He could call himself Indonesian-American in my book, but not African.
