The contention is not that it was performed previously otherwise, they would only have a few songs to sing. You are REALLY reaching if that is your argument and deluding yourself. It is the fact that they have sung/performed it as professionals or in a professional setting eg with one's own band.

lol @ pretending performing songs at bars and weddings with a group of friends counts as "professionally performed".

As someone else said. Elise is no where near the top of the list of contestants with professional experience. She is mid tier at best in that department.....

the different between the voice and american idol is that american idol tries to hide things, but the voice never shies away from it, the winner last year said on the show

that he had released an album before it, but he didnt feel it was him or something.

I could never watch the Voice....it always felt like it was more about pimping the judges than creating a star. I could be wrong though because my experience is limited......I only watched audition rounds the first season. I always felt that the talent pool was not as impressive as Idols in general.

I am open to being proved wrong though. Still waiting for the show to produce even a moderate star. (yes I realize its only been 1 1/2 seasons)

OMG I love that Skylar spent the whole mentoring session unsure if that was Gwen Stefani or not. LMAO! Skylar is now my favorite dumb-cute Southern girl since Jordan on Big Brother. Lord knows she's got more personality and talent than that unpleasant pig who made it to the finals last year.

But if Wind Beneath My Wings was only the second best of a dull night, that's because Jessica & Joshua sounded SO MUCH BETTER on their duet than their individual performances. God that was amazing! Can you imagine if this show hadn't been hijacked by teen girl power-texters who are determined to engineer a Philip/Colton F2 and we could actually have TWO minorities with vocal chops like that in the finals instead?

Oh and about halfway through Philip Phillips' performance, I got bored and just fast-forwarded it. Which has been happening a lot to me with his performances. Which also happened to me a lot last year with Scotty. And we all know how that ended.

For me Deandre was the very best last night. I don't like Skylar or Joshua - ruiners of song - and I never get bored with Phillip although his performance was not as on as previously. If the judges get the goosies because joshua rips the heart and soul out of a song by way, way, way over singing it then he will be their save when he gets to his elimination. It seems to me that Colton has become that smiley ass kisser and is a pretentious singer. Jessica is always spot on and delivers even when I don't like the song she sings. For me in duet and in single performance Deandre rocked the night from the get go and I know they are putting him up front with both his song and duet so he will be forhotten by voters.

AGREED.
Joshua just oversings the life outta the songs (Paging Jacob Lusk)
Now, Joshua oversings AND over-emotes the shit outta the songs.

What's that Jimmy? Deandre is still the worst of the boys? Colton is overrated? Are you fucking READING MY MIND??

I repeat, Jimmy needs to be at the judge's table. ONE Honest Asshole > The Triumvirate of Cacophony.

HOLLIE is fucking safe first?? Oh fuck me raw! Who the hell is voting for this girl? She hasn't had ONE good performance since the live shows began. Not a single one!

Oh well, at least Deandre got the boot and not Elise.

Deandre fights for his life with more bouncy, bouncy. I guess he really wanted to lose.

This was the first thing my eyes caught rather than any of the Idol discussion surrounding it.

Well the next time something GOOD happens on Idol, I'll be sure to type "Jizz down my throat!" just to get your attention. ;)

DeAndre was robbed. Whoever suggested he sing a Pointer Sisters song was out to get him.

Agreed.
She was out of tune and had been two straight weeks i think.
It is unfair in a way.
I remember feeling the same shock when Shannon was not eliminated earlier on after she slaughtered that Whitney song with unbelievable tone deafness.

Oh well thats the unpredictability and drama of TV

I think the duet with Joshua & Jessica Sanchez was very prophetic since they will probably end up being the top 2 in the finale. If Tyler utters the words "beautiful" or "over the top" any more, I'll know for sure that all those 70s drugs stunted his vocabulary.

As you said, "suggested". I don't think they force singers to sing a particular song. Although I could be wrong.

But unfortunately, the show does occasionally force them to sing genre's that are out of their element. Like in country week, or disco week, or crap like that.

Jimmy explained how the song choices are done a couple of weeks ago, if you want to take him at face value. The contestants pick three songs from the list and if Jimmy/the guest mentor agree, they do one of those songs. If the mentors don't like any of the song choices, they'll give the contestants a different song.

Although, I don't know what the process is for the trio/duet numbers they've been doing the last couple of weeks. Do those actually register into peoples' minds when they go to vote? Personally they're all filler to make the show stretch two hours that I ignore.

I always considered them filler too...until this week when Joshua and Jessica's awesome duet outshone everything else that night. Including their own solos.

"Second Time Around" by Shalamar (aka as of 4/4/12: Gwen Stefani) just came on my shuffle. I thought about Skylar.

Lets not forget the judges gave DeAndre a standing O, I thought he finally figured out you can not sing that high for the entire song. Very VERY can, I think of are the Be Bees not even Timberlake sings that high...t0 late. Oh but that dam hair..to much
