I've NEVER met a gay man in real life that was into indie music. So maybe theres some online.
First off though, weird thing, I'm also really into deathcore and grindcore (forms of metal or screaming garbage i guess you could say) and I've met a lot of gay guys in real life that are into it to, but none online. Weiiiiiiiiiird

okay ANYWAYS

If any of you are into indie music, any particular favorites?

I'm really into Metric, Stars, Lydia, tegan and sarah, bloc party and a lot of others.

you all need more metric in your life

I seriously would marry emily haines if given the chance.

And also, some of you may like tegan and sara.

two lesbian twins who are big inspirations to me
theres not very many gay people in the music industry
well at least, GOOD musicians

I have really gotten into Indie music in the last two years.

I started with Sufjan Stevens, Sigur Ros, and then got into Arcade Fire, Final Fantasy, and my latest is Animal Collective/Panda Bear.

I saw Arcade Fire live in concert in Tokyo last year, and Sufjan the year before, and on Tuesday I'm going to see Animal Collective in London - I can't wait!

But you're right, it is hard finding gay guys who are also into indie music.

Some Animal Collective:

Did you see the words? - [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gazFEelQRVc[/ame]
My Girls - [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5xm0e8AX0s[/ame]

Arcade fire is pretty good. Still need to listen to them more though.

And I love final fantasy, mainly for his mix on Your ex lover is dead by stars. And his cover of peach plum pear by joanna newsom

Hell freakin yes!!
The Shins, Sigur Ros, Animal Collective, Of Montreal, MGMT, Wolf Parade, Deathcab for Cutie, Vampire Weekend, Deerhunter, Fleet Foxes

I saw Of Montreal and MGMT last year, it was AMAZING!!!!!!
Fleet Foxes and Deerhunter were pretty freakin good this year too

I have to see Sigur Ros before I die

oh yeah, i love that song My Girls and Arcade Fire pretty much kicks ass

I listen to it sometimes, but am not entirely into the scene.

Also, as scains said, am not entirely sure on what classifies as Indie music.

Not exclusively. And more than any other genre, I dislike the term "indie", as it always always results in an argument that such-and-such a band aren't indie because:

* they're signed to a major label
* their latest album is too pop
* too many people know about them now

But yeah, I like Tegan & Sara, the Sounds, Kenna, Kinky, and plenty of other out-of-mainstream artists. Metric - not much a fan.

Do The Killers count as Indie music? I like them...

But it's funny how elitist people's opinions on music is getting as G-Lexington says...

while there is no definitive way that people define the word... i just simplify it as artists who are exploring themselves, their sound, and their audience

and i guess what makes an artist to me is something that is not crapped out by a corporation to be shoved down mainstream americas throat

as usual, i agree with Lex.

"indie" kind of doesn't mean anything anymore. it is, technically, a term to define musicians that aren't signed to a label and make and distribute their music independently of a label.

now people use it to label all kinds of artists. i mean, with the definition you gave, pankcakes, U2 could be considered an "indie" band. which they just aren't.

but, in answer to your question, yes... almost everything i listen to would be considered "indie"

yeah my definition sucked, but it makes sense to me i guess
it works for as a description for most indie bands

just not a definition of what makes an indie band, indie

^ yeah, which is kind of the problem...

people take a clearly defined term and use it to describe something else untill it fails to mean anything. you can't say indie doesn't really have a meaning because that's just not true. the meaning has just been changed.

i understand what "indie" has come to describe, i just hate using the term because it fails to really mean anything because, like you said, people who don't really know anything about music or where the term comes from use it to be "cool".

what about Beirut???? bat for lashes, joanna newsome, devendra banhart, and my favorite singer tori amos is an indie artist now. thought she has always been part of a major label until now. all of the band mentioned are amazing.

Sigur Ros are AMAZING live - especially with Amina supporting them.
Saw Animal Collective last night, they were incredible!

Oh yes, Beirut are brilliant, I love Zach's voice. Have just discovered Joanna Newsom's Ys album this year, Only Skin is too beautiful, and Tori Amos has been my favourite artist for years. Although, I have to say... the new album really exciting me at all...

Oh Patrick Wolf is another brilliant performer, and technically indie I guess. Saw him live twice a couple of weeks ago, the new album is going to be incredible.

Personally I view indie music as a whole sound/presentation. I know it was meant to mean independent artist but its changed.

Good choice of words... I was sorta thinking it was based on how they put together their music, trying to avoid the "norm" and try to make it unique in a way. I've heard Matt Mays called indie, so possibly that could be it.

I listen more to what is called IndieRock. There's a band moving inbetween those genres called MGMT, i can hardly recommend their album Oracular Spectacular.
