I voted for Dilana although I've only heard the original by Johnny and the variations by Wall of Vodoo, Dilana and Glambert. I'm not a country fan...not thrilled with glam rock either...pretty much narrowed the field down to Dilana...which I really do like because it's hauntingly cool...not over the top and "indulgent" like Glambert's version. I don't really feel like searching for the other alternatives listed although I like Costello...haven't heard his...

I could never pick a 'best' version.

I really enjoyed Lambert's version, though. A very unique moment on a show that could use a lot more of them.

I realize that it is not everyone's cup of tea, but damn - that guy can hit some serious notes. What a range he has....

I actually got goosebumps listening to it.

Dilana, she made that song way unique.

Adam is good but he completely copied Dilana's studio recording of that song...

I've only heard Blondie's, Johnny Cash's, and Social Distortion's versions. I like all three. With Blondie, the version in the movie Roadie is different than on the soundtrack-which is the same as on the Eat To The Beat reissues.. I like the version in the movie the best. I'll pick Blondie as number one with Social Distortion's a close second.

I would like to hear Grace Jones version. I'll search youtube for it in the morning.

You betcha!! And then he can do this. Seriously, anyone who thinks there isn't a really fine voice under the pyrotechnics and purple glitter should give this a listen.

I don't think anyone's denying that the boy can sing. The problem is that he abuses his voice. Every chance he gets, he goes WAY over the top into shrieking territory. Why do so many people think that singing loud = singing good?

Not every song is meant to be ripped to shreds by power vocals. Quite often, less is more.
So basically you are accusing all hard rock singers of not having any vocal talent.

I'm fairly certain he didn't make it to the top ten based on his inability to sing, and just by shrieking all of his songs. Surely the judges don't even think that, or else he would not have even made it to hollywood.

Seeing the clip of it performed on American Idol said, in essence, "Fuck country music." Which means it gets my vote.

I liked Wall of Voodoo's version as it was used in the James Franco hustler film "Sonny" during the end credits.

I've just never liked country music. Except for Patsy Cline.

OMG I love that Movie!

My personal favorite is of course the one sung by the one and only Johnny Cash. His version is perfect in my opinion. Although, even though it's not an option, I did like Joaquin Phoenix's version form the "Walk The Line" soundtrack. I know it's nearly identical to the original version, but Phoenix did a good job with it in my opinion.
