What makes someone want to be a dentist? What's their thought process when deciding?

Umm, what do I want to be when I grow up? I know, I think I'd like to spend all day with my hands in other people's mouths whilst inflicting pain on them.

I think they like to mess with people. They wait to ask you a question after they've got their hand and some sharp pointy thing in your mouth. How are you supposed to answer? Sign language?

I remember once when I was being "worked on" by a hygienist, I overheard a conversation in the next room between another hygienist and a friend of hers who stopped by to visit.

Friend: Did I tell you I'm going to be taking my state hygienist exam next week?
Hygienist: No, I didn't know that.
Friend: Can you give me any advice?
Hygienist: Well, I haven't taken it in a while, but from what I hear they're mostly just looking for a lot of blood when you examine the patient.
Friend: A lot of blood? Wow! ... can I borrow your marquis probe?
