Do you mean a recurring day, like a birthday, a festival or the day you vacate to your holiday villa in Tuscany; or a once-in-a-lifetime event that lives on in your memory surrounded by a golden glow that never fades with the passing years? If you mean the former, it's that day in late summer when you suddenly notice a faint hint of autumn in the air. If it's the latter, the answer is Thursday 28 March 1985, in London. The reason: I kissed a girl. Not for the first time--we'd kissed before, on the evening of Friday 23 October 1981, in Berlin. Both dates would fill the bill, but the second one was the climax of a whole day together, whereas the first came completely out of the blue. We'd been getting to know each other for a fortnight and it was the evening before I came home. There's a lot more besides. If I ever write my memoirs there'll be a whole chapter devoted to this story.
