As one who knows Birmingham UK intimately, I would say that the coach would have to sit outside in the surgery waiting room. But this is fantasy - probably as great a fantasy as regarding Birmingham as 'Mother'.

I extended Mother as in the Mother Country (UK) to the city - if that's grossly inappropriate, I apologize. Is Birmingham, UK a (former) steel town? Or is that here, in the back of my mind, too?

I seem to recall it's heavily blue collar, which may be what elicited your humourous take at my comment.

Brum, as the locals call it has never been a steel town - that was Sheffield - but has a reputation for 'metal bashing' that is to say manufacturing pressed steel goods and the like. Longbridge was home to a thriving vehicle manufacturing industry and the area supported components production. Adjacent to Birmingham is the famous "Black Country" the cradle of the Industrial Revolution. Here the skies once were blackened by the many forges churning out goods that in their heyday were exported to all corners of the globe. Famous for Coalport china, the Iron Bridge Gorge is now an open air museum.

Birmingham has a thriving jewelry quarter, more canals than Venice and a world class University. Its Symphony Hall and the Old Town Hall are home to some of the best music on the planet. Brummies, all too often mocked for their accent, are salt of the earth!
