  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Double Standard. "Looking" cancelled. "Orange is the new Black" renewed for fouth season.

Lesbians are definitely lot more widely accepted than gay men. Why? Straight plebs who think "DYKES R HAWT BUTT FAGITS R GROS ND I HAYT DEM".

LOL! Your insightful, and downright hilarious observations never fail to make me laugh.

Looking was cancelled because it had the appeal of a small indie movie, which was never going to have the ratings needed to sustain a series on cable television. This wouldn't be the first for HBO. Also because it wasn't gay fluff for the straight crowd, like most popular shows and fllms with gay male characters. I would say it should move to LOGO, but I don't think it would survive even there because clearly the gays don't appreciate Looking for what it is (as proven by this thread) and prefer much more caddy bullshit in their gay tv programming thank you very much.

OITNB is far more accessible to the masses. It's far less subtle, requires little investment, is far more comedic, has many recognizable names and faces, gets a shitload of press, has a much stronger promotional campaign, award nominations, and it's all over social media.

"Orange is the New Black" is simply more entertaining...Looking was angst and no direction, and viewers weren't going to take forever on waiting for a satisfactory mix of drama, humor, realism and soapiness(which is hard to pull off anyway on a consistent basis).

This post comes off as very pretentious.

Orange is the New Black is a better show. The end.

Nah. Better is subjective. There are far more variables involved in a show lasting or getting cancelled than just "i think this one is better". OITNB is more entertaining. Looking is about real people. OITNB is about cartoon characters. Apples and oranges...

I haven't seen either of these programmes, but there was a thread recently about Looking, and the consensus seemed to be that it had been cancelled because it was an horrendous programme.

I've been around for awhile and it's been my experience that programmes stay on the air when ratings are high enough that the broadcasting stations can gather enough sponsors to pay for it. If the programme doesn't bring in enough viewers and, hence, sponsors, the programmes are cancelled.

No double standard here. It's all about the money.

TV is really about entertainment.
Looking wasn't created as some intellectual exploration of gay life. If it was, it failed to convey that. If it was created as entertainment, it failed at that as well.

Orange is the new black is both popular and critically acclaimed. It's much better at doing what it set out to do.

You preferred looking which is fine. However no need to dump on OITNB. I don't like Empire but I'm not going to insult the people who enjoy it nor deny that is must be very good at something if it's so popular.

Btw I find the characters on OITNB more relatable personally than anyone on Looking.

Haven't watch either of them yet, from what i've gathered Looking was shit, even though it had the divine Russel Tovey in it and Orange is pretty good. Mystery solved.

Moving on.

I have no facts on this, and it is unlikely the studio would release this info either. But the channels which screen the gay soap would probably have a contingent of supporters, and also a horde of detractors. If the stations and producers were also recieving anti-gay hate and threats from the latter, it would be in their interests to minimize the potential harm to their employees by stopping the gay soap. In effect, they're being bullied into it. It's just a conjecture, but it seems plausible, given the rabid anit-gay hysteria whipped by the churches etc...

it was HBO. So... that wasn't the issue.

just youtube the trailer,
Sad how the US celebrate prisons as if it is a good thing, shame on the media/Hollywood what ever.
Too many people in prison for petty reasons.

None of this is an actual valid criticism of any tv show. Something being accessible, or not subtle, being a comedy, etc has nothing to do with being a bad show. I will second the notion that this just comes off as pretentious.

Also, how can people make comments about these shows if they haven't even seen them???

You can say the same for the OP - watching an episode of OITNB isn't the same as watching a season to see if it blossoms. I find shows are like books in that they may suck the first few pages and then get good, or they could suck all the way through or they could start nicely and then bomb...blah blah blah, you get the idea. But, and this is crucial, the OP didn't actually critique OITNB. He had plenty of adjectives but nothing to actually say about the show that you couldn't guess at from a 3 minute commercial. I highly doubt he watched it enough to critique it, in other words. Call it an educated guess - I've read enough reviews to know when there's bias before viewing. Again, if it was adequately watched at all. Which doesn't tend to occur with bias, imnsho.

-I mean, come on. He called it a lesbian show, and then there's someone else who actually thinks he's seen it?

- I mean, even I know it isn't a lesbian show and I've watched nary an episode. Actively avoid it, in fact. Which brings enormous amusement for me - usually don't get to point out when a review isn't an actual review but instead, more a collection of bullet points in a commercial.

Looking wasn't created as some intellectual exploration of gay life. If it was, it failed to convey that.

But was Looking meant to represent an intellectual exploration of gay life? Because it seemed like the story of 3 individuals and that´s about it. I never got why people expected every detail of every gay man´s life reproduced in a 20 minutes episode.

how can people make comments about these shows if they haven't even seen them???

Amen to that, and on that subject, on this forum after every episode there was at least one dude complainging about everything. Why watch it if you don´t like it?

The show wasn´t as bad as described here. Take a look at the hbo forums and see the amount of people criticizing the cancellation.

I have to agree with the OP.

As someone who doesn't like either show, it's kinda hard for me to make this realization as I don't know what people saw in Looking as I saw the pilot and hated it, and I also don't know what people see in Orange is the new black. I saw the first three episodes and I thought it was stupid. As someone who is a big fan of Oz, I was expecting like a female version of that. Not to say that Looking didn't do well for what is was, and as happy as I am to see it cancelled, I'm not gonna lie and say I'm shocked as I thought every other gay besides me watched it. lolz. Also, not to say Orange is the new black isn't successful because it is. Just don't like either show. But Que Sera, whatever.

I just want to say probably the educational response first, then the "Hollywood" answer next.

Orange is the new black has experienced well known and acclaimed actors, kinda realistic better editing, it's an hour long. It's a comedy series. It's on Everyone has netflix. I know many people, myself included who do not buy the movie channels.

Aside from the main guy, Looking in it's first season, had unknown British, Australian, Canadian actors playing American characters that couldn't fake an American accent if their life depended on it. It wasn't diverse enough. Episodes were only twenty something minutes long. Any character that got the most screen time was rich and white.

Now the Hollywood answer. Yes I do agree both men and women would rather see a lesbian induced storyline, than a gay storyline. A lot of it has to do with politics. In many countries, lesbianism is allowed, but male homosexuality isn't. So yeah think about that.

You don't have to have seen the shows in order to comment on them. Life teaches you things if you're willing to learn. I've seen thousands of television shows come and go in my lifetime. Some stay around for a long time. Some disappear very quickly. They do that whether or not I've watched them. But life has taught me that those which stay are watched by a lot of people, whether or not they are good. Those which disappear quickly aren't watched by enough people to make it financially worthwhile for the networks... whether or not they are good.

I think a better rant would be why HBO chose to renew "Girls" over "Looking". Seriously, "Girls" has been on for years now, has a completely uninteresting protagonist, and the ratings are just as abysmal as Looking's. Why continue to air a failed show that doesn't even have enough of a fan base to buy an autobiography of it's protagonist? Give a new show a chance.

Sorry for my rant. I am just sick and tired of the world being okay with lesbians but not gays.

Two women kissing and making out is hot to everybody. But when two men kiss and make out, it's considered disgusting.

I have not watch either "Looking" or "Orange is the New Black".

But I don't think I want to watch OITNB because it's about prison, drugs and female inmates and I have absolute no interest in those stuffs.
