Ebola Comes to Atlanta

You realize that wikipedia is edited by the common man, yes? Which in a way is rather unfortunate since people can go in and mess up all your hard work. I once spent hours researching various deadly agents with notations and references included only to have someone wander by and fuck it up later.

And still it's rated as more trustworthy than Britannica! (At least on subjects not under controversy, but wiki has done a lot to fix that.)

I'd generally agree with you but you're arguing a specific detail, in which case some light checking-up is never amiss.

It's not heavy research, there should be numbers linking you to the resources' title, author and page number.

Also, never presume the articles know what they're talking about when joe schmoe can write or edit one. They're not peer reviewed by people in their respective fields so much as lightly looked over by whomever is available at the time. If that. Always prudent to check up on research.

***I type that as someone who reads and edits wikipedia for fun. Yeah, I'm that guy. A hit at all the parties, I swear. Anyway, never put trust in something you don't check out for yourself.

The English Wiki on ebola cites WHO in the section on how contagious it is.

BTW, as someone who also edits wikipedia, I know that technical articles tend to be watched like hawks by people with world-class expertise. Another way to check credibility is to look at who's keeping tabs on a topic and their credentials. But in general, unless it's a topic under controversy, wiki is a sound source.

I would echo Kulindahr in saying that I think the sentiment (and you hear it widely around the net) that wikipedia is somehow inherently wildly inaccurate consistently tends to put a questionable over-confidence in something being correct just because it's in a printed book. At least the information on wikipedia is subject to challenge by a wide variety of eyes and not necessarily the work of as little as one person.

I think therein lies the trouble - nobody is as clued up on Ebola as they are on the other ones. Even the guy who knows more than anyone doesn't know that much relative to more commonly-seen viruses.

According to both WHO and the CDC, Ebola cannot be transmitted via sneezes. It could possibly be transmitted if you blew your nose and wiped the snot on someone's open cut, though.

Not correct.

An exhaustive* search which I did pretty much said "transmission by coughing and sneezing has not been adequately confirmed."

Certainly it doesn't seem like it is a massive risk, but I'm not sure it's one I would take until that adequately became a conclusively.

I didn't say inherently wildly inaccurate. I said edited by the common man. Usually things done by, say, the guy around the corner are mostly right, it's some of the specifics they tend to fuck up. And I did point out that instead of taking wikipedia on specifics as a golden truth, one should look at the damn sources first to make sure they're not skewed or outdated. Science literature tends to be peer reviewed; if it hasn't been peer reviewed and you google it or 'ask around', that info comes out pretty damn quick because everyone and their dog will be sneering at it.

I didn't say inherently wildly inaccurate.

I realize you did not. I was addressing the general distrust you run into around the net. People make it sound like it's wrong 90% of the time and they can hardly believe anyone uses it as a source.

My bad, Kuhlindar responded to moi, thought you were as well with the echoing - figured I'd kill two birds with one stone and combine replies. Thou Shalt Not Use Wiki as a Source is common for writing papers and extensive research. It's not a bad starting point but generally not good to cite when having anyone else read your work. Tbh, general encyclopedias aren't good to cite either unless your work is history related, since there's new information all the bloody time. It's just, I read a lot and some of it is about teens and early twenty-somethings trying to cite wikipedia in their papers (there's internet sites where teachers hold up examples of work (sans identifying information, obv) and say "look at this shit!" and it's damned depressing.

These people in the video are wearing a paper face mask and a plastic suit to protect themselves from the virus.

It's kind of ironic that it's happening in Liberia, the only country in Africa founded by United States colonization. The colonizers established a new country with the help of the American Colonization Society, a private organisation who thought former slaves would have greater opportunity there. It became a Republic in 1847 with a government modeled on that of the USA and named its capital city Monrovia after—

wait, so now Liberia is being controlled by a brutal drug-crazed torturer who is spreading ebola and now ebola has spread from Atlanta to Disney World?

Yeah, World War Z was an awesome movie.

But since we're all going to die now anyway from a zombie apocalypse as a result of an ebola outbreak, may as well make myself an organic pb&j sammich and have someone poor their ebola infected sweat and snot all over the bread and hock up some thick phlegm for good measure.

may as well live it up.

I'll wait and catch it on SYFY when they come out with Ebolanado or Ebolaraptor

Sure is, and it's all America's fault too.

Meh, I think I'll stick to my original plan for today, which is to get the chicken BLT Ranch from McDonalds, and have the homeless guy behind the dumpster put his Ebola infested cum on my sandwhich. Too bad he's too lazy to get a job at the drive thru so I could just order "extra ranch" #firstworldproblems

Ask him if he's a JUB dropout. Maybe we know him. Maybe he's been mentioned in one of those 'who do you miss/recent dropouts' threads – it might cheer him up a bit to know about it.

^you forgot the T....

World War ET...
Every man is forced to feed me his ebola infested cum, no more children...of men, we go extinct before the disease finishes us all off.

Somehow, because of all the nutrients in the semen, I am strengthened and build up an immunity to ebola, end up being the sole survivor of the human race. Apes are happy...they start filming the next installment of the Planet Of The Apes remakes, I become an honorary Bonobo but only shortly after discovering Borg's still functioning nanoprobes. I assimilate all the apes with the nanoprobes and we are all on a quest to become perfect cybernetic Bonobos....planet Earth is now populated by a billion pansexual Bonobo Borg.
