Thank you for starting this thread.(*8*)

A nice posting, and a very good reminder.

I know that just seeing a photo of that fence where he was tied sends shivers down my spine.

It was a terrible tragedy, and something that no person should ever have to go through...Reguardless of their sexual orientation, religion, or any other miniscule difference in this large variety of people we call the human race.

One can only hope, that an event like this would never occur again.

The hatred, fear, whatever it is that drives people to hurt or kill because of sexuality,I'll just never understand it.Nor would I want to.We should never let ourselves forget Matthew Sheppard,or anyone attacked because they are different, outside the so-called mainstream, because everyone deserves dignity and respect from others in their persons.

I can't believe it has been 8 years already.....

hate will always exist in the world unfortunately.

all we can do as gay men is be prepared for the worst, and welcome into our lives people that accept and love us.

R.I.P. :(

I almost had a nervous break-down over the Matthew Shepherd murder!

I canNOT remember many things that affected me like his death! I also had trouble dealing with the fact that his murderers did NOT get charged with a hate-crime either, for that crime was NOT on the books in Wyoming!

I also could NOT believe the Westboro Baptist Church people under the leadership of a so-called "Reverend" Phelps, who picketed the funeral saying that Matthew was living in hell as a result of him being Gay!! I really felt sorry for Matthew's mother, having to endure NOT only the loss of her son; but seeing such nasty, hateful pickets about her son!

I do know that a lot of good has come as a result of Matthew's death; if any good can come of it.........for now there's so much love and understanding
sourrounding Matthew's Memorial.

Rest in Peace dear Matthew!(*8*) (*8*)

Forgive me my ignorance. I know this is something about being gay.. i can semi recall what happened - but not in any details. The name certainly rings true.

What happened again?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Shepard

Shortly after midnight on October 7, 1998, 21-year-old Shepard met McKinney and Henderson in a bar. According to McKinney, Shepard asked them for a ride home. Subsequently, Shepard was robbed, severely beaten, tied to a fence and left to die. McKinney and Henderson also found out his address, intending to burglarize his home. Shepard was discovered by a bicyclist 18 hours later, still alive but unconscious.

Shepard suffered a fracture from the back of his head to the front of his right ear. He also had severe brain stem damage, which affected his body's ability to regulate heart rate, body temperature and other vital signs. There were also about a dozen small lacerations around his head, face and neck. His injuries were deemed too severe for doctors to operate. Shepard never regained consciousness and remained on full life support. He was pronounced dead at 12:53 a.m. on October 12 at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. Police arrested McKinney and Henderson shortly thereafter, finding the bloody gun as well as the victim's shoes and wallet in their truck. The two men had attempted to get their girlfriends to provide alibis.

After the attack, the prosecutor told reporters that Shepard's friends had been vocal about Shepard's sexuality: "They were calling the County Attorney's office, they were calling the media and indicating Matthew Shepard is gay and we don't want the fact that he is gay to go unnoticed."

Still devastating. I have a hard time even reading about him still to this day. It is perhaps my greatest fear- the fear of ignorant humans.

Beautiful, thoughtful post.

Always be aware of what exists around us, and embrace what is good in others.

Matthew Sheperd did not die in vain.

Wow...Thanks for posting this....I cried like a baby when that happened. Then I got angry....Now when I remember him...I kinda feel a little sad but I think alot of good came from such a horrible thing...

where is your anger now.

I've never been able to express myself in any kind of pride rank because of the results most later have, some straight guy bitching...

American Triangle Lyrics

Music by Elton John
Lyrics by Bernie Taupin

Seen him playing in his backyard
Young boy just starting out
So much history in this landscape
So much confusion, so much doubt

Been there drinking on that front porch
Angry kids, mean and dumb
Looks like a painting, that blue skyline
God hates fags where we come from

'Western skies' don't make it right
'Home of the brave' don't make no sense
I've seen a scarecrow wrapped in wire
Left to die on a high ridge fence
It's a cold, cold wind
It's a cold, cold wind
It's a cold wind blowing, Wyoming

See two coyotes run down a deer
Hate what we don't understand
You pioneers give us your children
But it's your blood that stains their hands

Somewhere that road forks up ahead
To ignorance and innocence
Three lives drift on different winds
Two lives ruined, one life spent

I, too, was horribly afflicted by Shepard's death. I made copies of the newspaper articles and put up a display in my class area about Shepard's death and homophobia.

The insult of horrible Phelps is almost too much to bear.

If there was a god, Phelps would be dead already.
