I'm now going frantic because alot of my homework was on it. I left it on and was typing.. and went to go get the mail. I left it on in the bedroom and I came back it was powered off. I tried to press the power button.. and even holding P+R+Command+Option and still nothing.

What Can I do? Macs never really crash!

Let it cool down for an hour. If it still won't power up, you may have to take it to an Apple Service Centre. Sounds like you may have lost the power supply, which is a possibility in any machine of that age.

eMacs is a nice operating system, it lacks a good editor though

if its the power supply.. how can i fix it? You mean the power cord or what?

No, it's the internal power converter, that converts your 120V AC mains supply to the DC voltages required in the computer. It's a box inside the box, and unless you REALLY know what you're doing, should be changed by a professional technician.

On eBay they seem to sell for around 15-20 bucks. But really, you should take it to a technician to be assessed. Power supply is only one possibility - if the logic board (Apple language for motherboard) is fried, for example, the computer will not be repairable for a reasonable cost.

Technically speaking, Madonna's computer didn't crash, it broke down. I must have missed Apple's "Mac's never, ever breakdown, ever" advertising campaign. :-)

M.,

I am sorry to hear of your computer troubles...........my computer (not an Apple product) crashed late last year and I was off-line until I could resolve the problem...........

...........I do wish you good-luck in resolving your computer problems...........it can be a stressful time if you let it be...........

As mentioned this is less of a crash and more of a breakdown and of course Apple computers are liable to them as well as PC's however part of the increased cost of a Mac is the quality of the hardware they use so fewer breakdowns. The other benefit is that the software is written for the hardware so there will not be any "driver issues" Possibly one of the major downfalls of windows which tries to accommodate everybody's hardware is it crashing due to driver issues, not really MS's fault but that of the hardware manufacturers except maybe in the case of Vista where I believe hardware manufacturers didn't have the time or specifications to write the drivers before Vista's release. Part of the reason why it has been such a flop.

But back to topic. This is almost certainly a power supply problem, one of the more common causes of breakdowns on any platform and easily tested for using a multimeter with access to a drive cable for testing.
