Explosions, shootings reported in central Paris

A friend of mine has a relative who went to Paris on vacation today. He told me he got in contact with the person but he's still very worried.

I'll be checking the need tomorrow morning. So damn sad.

It is a credit to the journalistic integrity of news programs willing to wait for facts to be established before they report them.

It's called the Evening News, not the Evening Guesswork, or the Evening Rant.

I can see where this is headed as well as anyone, but for us to be the ones called "civilized," we need to wait for proof before we pick our targets.

Remember what happens when we don't do that: we're still waiting for Bush Junior's Weapons of Mass Destruction. We're still waiting to shake a grain of truth out of Toenail Blair's "Sexed Up Dossier."

For god's sake BBC. :##:

Main 10pm news report on national TV:

Not ONE mention of the word 'terrorist'. Not ONE mention of the word 'Islam' or 'Islamic'.

And get this I just heard the newscaster ask "So there is no evidence yet these attacks are linked?" to be backed up by their reporter in the city.

](*,)

Yeah right, three simultaneous incidents including a massacre of people in a bar and a mass hostage situation were ALL just coincidental. And yeah right maybe it was three local Frenchmen with grudges against their food service or employers or something. That's REALLY likely isn't it?

Welcome to the world of the BBC folks. Where Islamic extremism, terrorists, and fundamentalists of pure evil, are avoided and excused from day one.

Disgraceful.
No it is not it would be disgraceful for the bbc to make statements without the facts.

Yeah, but it was so obvious. We knew it was only a matter of time before they'd once again display their ugliness for all to see.

What you are missing is that Islam has relied upon killing from day one. Mohammud led armies to force conversions and slaughtered 600 Jews of Medina. Armies spred out and forced the middle east to convert or die. Even today, a majority of muslims say the a muslim who converts should be executed. We need for them to know that these killings prove the evil of their religion. By faling to make the connection, we enable their leaders and members to pretend that it has nothing to do with their religion.

Late this evening the New York Times published a series of messages of support from world leaders. I looked in vain for any from the Muslim world, and given the world view of the NYT I'm sure that if there had been any, they would have been featured front and center.

My God.

*Guys* Let's stop sniping at each other...

Prayers for the victims and their loved ones

Well the Muslim Council of Great Britain already has. I'm sure soon enough Iran will.

This whole thing is a fucking mess, but until we have proof who carried out this attack we shouldn't start pointing fingers - no matter how obvious it is to many why this attack was carried out.

Islamist apologists should be shamed and shut down.
They always make excuses and change the topic into Israeli occupation, muslim discrimination ... etc.

From Hollande:

What happened yesterday in Paris and in Saint Denis is an act of war and this country needs to make the right decisions to fight this war. This act committed by the terrorist army, Islamic State, is against who we are, against a free country that speaks to the whole world.

It is an act of war prepared and planned outside, with outside involvement which this investigation will seek to establish. It is an act of absolute barbarism. France will be ruthless in its response to Islamic State.

At this painful and serious time, which is such a decisive one for our country, I call for unity, for a collective spirit and for cool heads. I will address Parliament at Versailles on Monday.

France is strong, and even if she is wounded, she will rise once again. Even if we are in grief, nothing will destroy her.

France is strong, valiant and will defeat this barbarism. History reminds us of this and the strength we today bear to come together convinces us of this.

My compatriots, what we defend is our homeland and much more than that, it is our own values of humanity and France will bear its responsibilities.

It is wise to remember that the terrorist group Isis wants Holy War in Europe. The best thing that France and the rest of Europe can do is not play into their hands.

I think the expectation was for the overt show of support from Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, and so on, from their heads of state, to put their markers on the table and risk ire of sympathetic populations at home.

Not disparaging the religious leaders you have cited, only saying "leaders" was a reference to states' leaders.

. . .

Apparently the French are settled on ISIS despite the buzz that it may be Al Qaeda this time. In the end, it is immaterial, since the terrorism itself is the problem, not the different shade of gray.

And you're right about the need for cool calculation in the response. Due to the magnitude of this attack, it risks a headlong rush, couched in the sanctimony of the righteous, a holy war indeed, minus the religion on the West's side. The emotion is not unlike the prelude to WWI.

I'm also concerned for the Syrians and other refugees flooding into Europe at a time when reactionary sentiments will surely run high. It wouldn't take but a couple of ugly conflicts with Islamophobes and other hate groups against the refugees to escalate a big problem.

...It wouldn't take but a couple of ugly conflicts with Islamophobes and other hate groups against the refugees to escalate a big problem.

Which is probably part of the terrorists goal. Victimising people who are trying to flee terrorism further while destabilising European race relations.

I suspect European agencies will begin to target the backers of terrorist groups on an individual level rather than going in to a country with all guns blazing.

I'm more concerned that the refugees will be in a tinder box.

ABC News just reported that the French discovered a Syrian passport beside one of the suicide bombers.

In any case, they have done - http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2015/11/14/Arab-states-denounce-Paris-attacks-as-violation-of-human-values-.html

It is good to read of it. Thanks for the link.

I hope Pakistan joins them.

It is not weird. They are a strong voice in the clash.

Indonesia is the most populous, but they don't tend to lead in Muslim affairs.

At any rate it is good to get news sources, as the U.S. slices the stories too narrowly and ignores global views. Thanks again for the links. I will bookmark them.

Praying does not help anything, act!

Prayer is just as powerful a tool as action. If you combine the two you have a powerful force. Until you are able to act, never neglect the power of prayer.:rb:

Sure, well it was just a bit out of nowhere. If it was ISIS, as it seems to be, Pakistan won't have much influence on it seeing as they are mostly Shia Muslims.
