You know that we love to cook.

And what a festive time of the year. Here's an old favourite I know you'll want to try.

Anyone else have some classics? New Year's celebrations are soon here!

Oooh! That log looks like Fanny's!

The dainty onion and mayonnaise sandwich hors d'oeuvres are delicious for parties- a recipe ascribable to James Beard, if I'm not mistaken (or at least the one I'm thinking of is). But you may have to enforce their consumption as a rule on everyone present in the interests of egalitarianism... so that no-one gets away with not having bad breath for the rest of the party.

^ Not available.

But I am sure it was wretched.:rotflmao:

You can watch on youtube - it's beefcake.

If I knew where the thread was, where I put in my chili recipe, I'd copy it and insert it here.

Spooger, if we ever meet (but, the "tall order" being you actually being able to procure rattlesnake AT THE TIME), could I try some of your grilled rattlesnake? I've tried it one time, and I THINK that it tasted pretty damn good, but I was so distracted because it was also cooked improperly and it felt like I was trying to eat steel cables. Not even sure that I ever managed to get as much as one gram at a time.

I had rattlesnake a second time as part of a rodizio, that Brazilian thing where they bring you MEAT, MEAT, MEAT, MEAT, MEAT, MEAT until you're full...this was in Salt Lake City of all places...but it was so dressed-up (mixed with other meat, and spiced to the max) that I didn't get a proper taste then, either, and as such I don't even consider it to be a genuine "try".

I'd really like to taste it for real, minimal spicing and all.

The times I've eaten snake (rattle snake, copper head, rat snake) was on camping trips.
The snakes were killed in or near our campsite.
I hate to kill game animals only for sport - once killed or wounded we make every effort to find it and - yes - eat it, use it for food.
Fish not intended to be eaten are released. I have no trophy on my walls.

Fresh snake, cleaned and prepped, broiled over a campfire ---- yummm!
So, Frank, if this is what you have the appetite for, come-on-down, for an old style camp out and campfire cooking.

You're on! Now I just have to find my way to West Virginia. It all depends on my traveling agenda - Fairmont and Bluefield suggest parts of two VERY different and divergent trips I'd be likely to make, lol.

I'm pretty adventurous - I've tried a number of different insects, and I would have no hesitation at all trying rat in southeast Asia.

A big bonus if fish is also part of the campout diet - yum! But aren't rattlesnakes pretty hard to find? I've never seen or heard one in the wild.

Everyone loves Bar-B-Que, so try this one

Bar-B-Qued Meatballs

1 to 1 1/2 pound of lean ground beef
1 teaspoon salt/pepper
1 egg beaten
1/2 white or red onion, chopped
1/2 red or green bell pepper, chopped

Mix meat, seasonings, egg, and half of the chopped onion & bell peppers. Form mixture into 3/4 inch to 1 inch diameter balls and brown in a hot skillet. Drain off as much grease as possible, then mix the ingredients for the sauce directly into skillet with meatballs, additing additional catsup as needed. Cover & cook over low heat until sauce is bubbly and as thick as desired. Serve over angel hair pasta or spaghetti.

Sauce:
Saute the remaining chopped onions & bell peppers with the browned meatballs. Add the following and follow recipe above:
3 tablespoons of vinegar
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup catsup

A cooking tip for today.

Because it is grilling season.

My neighborhood has had so many rattlesnakes this year. It must be becaus of the forest fires surrounding us last year. Most of the time, animal control takes them farther into the forest. We have actually seen a lot more snakes in general, garter snakes, king snakes, but mostly rattlesnakes.
