  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

For my birthday this year I'd like you to pay this bill.

What he suggests certainly doesn't seem like much fun. What's he going to do when your birthday rolls around, pay one of your bills? That sounds like the beginning of a truly dreary custom.

Anyway, I think half the fun of giving and getting gifts is surprise. I don't ask my friends what they want, and they don't ask me. That means I sometimes get gifts I don't particularly want, but other times I get delightful gifts that it never would have occurred to me to ask for. So it balances out.

If someone's in genuine need, that's a different story. Then I help out as best I can (but never with a loan -- that's the fastest way to end a friendship).

That's so tacky.

It's like offering someone a drink at a bar and having them say "How about you just give me the five bucks?"

I have to agree with Soilwork here. Sounds like the guy is hard up for money - buy him a Visa gift card

LMAO!!! That is sooooo funny and true

I would be a little suspicious. Maybe it has to do with my own relationship with my best friend but maybe not. He kept some things a secret but me, being the good detective (stalker) I am figuerd out all hei secrets but anyway... It really sounds like he might have some hidden financial problems that he is not telling you about.

I paid off my best friend's college loans when she got married. That was my wedding gift/birthday gift for the next couple of years. She didn't ask for me to pay them off, so she was surprised.

Sounds like an idea.

Thanks Brian, now I know what to get for a friend in two weeks time! :D

I would probably have to pay his medical bills...after I bitch-slapped him!!
