What he suggests certainly doesn't seem like much fun. What's he going to do when your birthday rolls around, pay one of your bills? That sounds like the beginning of a truly dreary custom.
Anyway, I think half the fun of giving and getting gifts is surprise. I don't ask my friends what they want, and they don't ask me. That means I sometimes get gifts I don't particularly want, but other times I get delightful gifts that it never would have occurred to me to ask for. So it balances out.
If someone's in genuine need, that's a different story. Then I help out as best I can (but never with a loan -- that's the fastest way to end a friendship).
