Hi all

I've been asked to sing at a funeral in a couple of weeks and need some ideas for songs. What song would you want played at your funeral? Religious or not... just please don't say Wind Beneath My Wings ;-)

"His Eye is on the Sparrow". When I was a kid, I remember seeing Ethel Waters, as an old woman, sing it at a Billy Graham crusade. Her best days as a singer were gone, but tears glistened in her eyes because she really believed its message. It was a beautiful moment and the quiver in her voice made it all the more beautiful.

"Amazing Grace"
"I've Got a Mansion Just Over the Hilltop"
"Prepared to Meet Thy God"
"When the Roll is Called Up Yonder"
"I'll Fly Away"

  • Send in the Clowns
  • Amazing Grace
  • Prayer of St. Francis (Make me a channel of your peace...)
  • Ode to Joy

Well at my funeral I want them to play Great Jubilation, by Barbara Striesand.

Thanks for the suggestions so far - keep them coming pls :-)

I'll give you some more info about this particular funeral - it's for my friend's grandmother who died of Alzheimer's Disease... I knew her before she got ill and she was the most hilarious, open-minded 70 year-old you'll ever meet. So I'm sure the family would love something relevant to that.

Other suggestions I've had include 'You Raise Me Up' (Westlife), Never Grow Old (Aretha Franklin) and Ave Maria (although the latter is really difficult to sing!!)

How about Forever Young - Rod Stewart ? PS: My condolences.

Excellent choice! Add this to the list for my funeral please.

"My Way"--Frank Sinatra

I honestly do like the beautiful of the tradition Chopin piece that is usually played as funeral music - Marche Funebre, I think.

Natalie Merchant sings a song on her Ophelia CD that seems like a traditional (18th - 19th century) funeral type song:
When they ring the golden bells

For something more upbeat, I'd suggest 525600 minutes (the theme song to rent).

I also just sorta like it is well with my soul.

I love that Rent song too - it's called Seasons of Love, so Google tells me. Again, it's very appropriate...

Oh, I forgot to say that I'll be singing it as a duet with the lady's granddaughter... so anything that is meant to be sung as a duet would be great too!
