October is LGBT History month but noting it on the Philadelphia school district's calendar has irked some parents. The district sends copies of the calendar to the homes of students and some parents say the reference is promoting sex.

"Gay and Lesbian Month? That's sexuality - that's a preference," Nicola Rucker, 41, a mother of two students, ages 9 and 11, told the Philadelphia News..

"In elementary school, most 8- and 9-year-olds don't understand that," she said. "Everybody raises their kids differently. I don't want my 9-year-old son learning about this stuff unless he's old enough to come to me and ask."

Even if homosexuality were a "preference," how does that promote sex? If I announce "I'm gay," that doesn't mean I'm saying "Everyone have sex."

I understand that everyone raises their children differently, but what if a parent DOES want their child to learn about homosexuality in school? Is it far to disadvantage them for the sake of other parents? This lady makes it sound like gays are incapable of doing anything good. This is a HISTORY month, not a SEX month.

I was 13ish maybe just younger but people on here have said they've known at 9.

And how many gay kids are going to tell mammy, lol.

I agree completely; I knew I was diffferent since the 5th-6th grade, and I have yet to tell either parents. If they were taught tolerance when they were kids, and if I were taught that gays are normal and can be good people, then I would have told them long ago. Unfortunately, that's not the case, thanks to parents like Nicola Rucker.

Let me guess how the ignorant bitch probably finished that sentence...

"... so I can tell him that queers are evil and sick and perverted and going to hell and that I will burn his pecker off with a blowtorch if he ever asks me again."

I agree with the parent. I believe if kids want to know about sex or what not they should go to their parents. I dont agree with any of the history months like black history month, Jewish history month, or Gay history month for that matter. Just because you give something its own month doesnt mean anything. If someone wants to know the history of something then they can go and research it if they want. She wasnt saying that being gay is wrong she just said that she doesnt want her kid to be learning about that, and I agree. Because if the kids are learning about it, kids are mean and if there is one gay kid in the room, the other kids will ridicule that kid and keep outing that kid and making him feel bad about himself. I dont think there should be any history months. I think its just stupid to be honest.

If they want their kid to learn about it then they can teach it themselves. I wouldnt want to hear it from a teacher anyway. I wouldnt want to hear about it period. I dont care! The history of gay people is bad anyway why would you want to hear about it?

Well, poppy6785, I can see where you're coming from. But I still completely disagree with "parents say the reference is promoting sex." I have no idea what that notion is about. And doesn't Black History Month promote what blacks have accomplished? It further promotes people like Frederick douglas, W.E.B DuBois, MLK Jr., Rosa Parks, Constance Baker Motley, etc. Here's an excerpt from infoplease.com (history.com says similarly):

We owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Born to parents who were former slaves, he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age twenty. He graduated within two years and later went on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard. The scholar was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black American population—and when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time.

Why can't we talk about what gays have accomplished? Simply google "famous gays" and you can find many gays and lesbians all throughout history. (Ex. Walt Whitman, Alice B. Toklas, Tchaikovsky, Harvey Milk, Andy Warhol, W. H. Auden, Thomas Eakins, Sir Ian McKellen, Wendy Carlos, Malcolm Forbes, Greta Garbo, Magnus Hirschfeld, Sophia Parnok, etc.) It is a parents right to expose their children to what they want, but to say "gay=coice=sex" is wrong. Homosexuals and lesbians should not be degraded to beings whose lives revolve around sex.

Also, the history of gays is bad, mainly because people are ignorant to the fact that all people are NOT the same. Homophobia, rascism, and sexism all stem from ignorance.

I've got some bad news for you, Poppy dear...

It appears that EVIL MOTHERFUCKERS have mis-informed, mis-educated and brainwashed you.

These EVIL MOTHERFUCKERS hope that you never learn the TRUE history of gay people.

pride:

The greatest artists the world has ever known - including Michelangelo and Leonardo DaVinci - were GAY.

The greatest writers the world has ever known - including W. Somerset Maugham, Yukio Mishima, Tennessee Williams and Walt Whitman - were GAY.

Let's not forget to talk about Political Leaders - Have you ever heard of Harvey Milk, Barney Frank or Alexander the Great? Queer as $3 bills.

From Architecture to Zoology - Gay men and women have made important contributions to EVERY FIELD.

We are EVERYWHERE.
We have ALWAYS been everywhere.
We always will be everywhere.
They know it.
And it scares them to death.

It definitely belongs in a curriculum starting in high school, but not earlier. The sex part comes in somehow, even if it is not about gay sex...what is being celebrated and taught?Of course gays have made a tremendously positive contribution to humanity, and that should be somthing that is taught, but high school, where identities are forming,is the best place to start a course of this kind.

I went through sex-ed in the 5th grade, and again in the 6th. I, and all of my peers, knew what sex was. And we knew what gay was by at least the 7th grade.
Gay history month would teach that being gay is normal, and it would show that gays are normal people. I was forming my identity WAY before high school. But, I do understand that figuring out the best time to introduce this subject matter is hard to figure out.
If you have to ask what is being taught in gay history, well then, ask yourself what is being taught in black history month, or Jewish history month, or women's history month. All of these months are dedicated to people that have been prejudiced against, and they were created to destroy any preconceived ideas about gays, blacks, Jews, women, etc. not being equal.

Hmmmm....

Seems the city of Brotherly Love isn't into man sex....Which is strange when one thinks about it.

Someone had to say it.....

Duh, it's BROTHERLY love!
Incest, ok.
Gay sex, NO.

you guys have a gay history month?

a whole month wow

Those parents should know that there is a big difference between sex education and history. History is about learning from the past to understand the present, put it simply. I studied the history of black people in America and thanks to that I have a better understanding of how racism originated, how it was dealt with, the challenges they faced and how race relations got to the state that they are in today.

Gays are often under-represented in all sections of high school education. The only other representation is through exagerrated, unrealistic and degrading stereotypes on TV. History is one of the few traditional academic subjects in which real gays can have a voice. At least through the study of gay history all sutdents will have a better opinion of gays in that achievement is not determined by sexuality as was shown by the greats mentioned in this thread. These parents seem blind by their determination to wrap their children in cotton wool and to break this continual cycle ignorance, a breakthrough like this gay history month needs to be upheld.
