That isn't necessarily so. You don't have to be religious to make someone a godfather and you don't need to be religious to become one.

A godparent merely becomes the child's legal guardian in the event of the parents' inability to care for the child for whatever reason.
 
I think only the Muggles are foolish enough to have any religion.

In a world of magic, it isn't needed.
