James will join Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter and of course Alex Trebek for a prime time Jeopardy -The Greatest of All Time

The first contestant to win three matches will receive $1 million. Each runner-up will take home $250,000.

Rutter is the top all-time money winner with $4.7 million, followed by Jennings with $3.4 million and Holzhauer with $2.7 million.

Jeopardy! to hold Greatest Of All Time tournament - The AV Club

Hold your loved ones close and start praying for mercy, because the gods (of trivia) are going to war and there’s no telling what sort of horrific destruction will be left in their wake. This comes from USA Today, which says that ABC has announced a new primetime Jeopardy! event called The Greatest Of All Time that will feature three of the quiz show’s most powerful combatants going head-to-head-to-head for the first time ever—and in a testament to humanity’s resilience, none of them are a robot this time. The three competitors in question are recent Tournament Of Champions winner James Holzhauer, 72-game winner Ken Jennings, and all-time prize money record-holder Brad Rutter (with Jennings and Rutter having previously competed against IBM’s Watson computer in 2011).

The special tournament is going to air on ABC in primetime, starting on January 7, and it’s going to involve an unusual structure. Rather than a one-off winner-take-all episode (or even a regular week-long event), each episode will have two back-to-back games, with the contestant who has the highest total prize money winning the match. Play continues until someone wins three matches, so it could last for anywhere between three and seven episodes—depending on if it’s a shutout or a more protracted battle where they each manage to win two before necessitating a final playoff game. The winner gets $1 million and the other two get $250,000, but the real prize is that the winner will become the master of all space and time (at least when it comes to trivia knowledge)

they showed a lot of behind the scenes, which I like and I think more shows should do.

Alex was the second half hour

Trebek was shown on a clip tonight where he posed with the three Tournament of Champions contestants. As he stood there agape, his color was ashen, and he looked very tired, a bit like death warmed over.

I wouldn't go that far but he did look tired. His face is really puffy too not in a fat way but like someone who is having kidney problems.

And they still haven't called me. And my eligibility ends this spring and I'll have to take the test again and do the audition and wait again...but I do have a few months of hope remaining.

Ken pulled off the win on the first night by a mere $200 over James.

James had good competition on the buzzer in these games.

I like these harder questions. I feel more elated getting ones the pros don't. However, it's more often they get ones I don't. Like the ultimate Final J! tonight. I had no idea who a comet that crashed was named for. Well...this is how I learn.

I'd have preferred this in the summer. There are two hockey games I've been flipping between during the commercials.

I actually knew the comet final jeopardy because of the clue about him being buried on the moon. I came across it once looking for facts for the little known fact thread.

I'm also glad that James had competition in this game and glad that the score was so close.

The ABC News clip looked farrr worse than Alex did in the show, but during the show, his makeup was badly done, and his chin and jaw had a pallor. Part was from the purple cast, but part because his foundation isn't using enough red. He was so gray in skin tone that he looked a corpse.

I don't think Alex is going to be with us by summer. It's a real shame. He was as charming as ever, though he's sitting as host now. And he's bloated. His suit wasn't thin and trim.

I'm glad he's had a good life, but it still feels like it's ending too soon. He's living it right up to the last though.

Tonight's regular show seemed awfully weak. I call it a "Hollywood moment" when I know the answer and none of the contestants do. There were many tonight.

But the primetime show tonight? They're better.

I am very pleased to see Alex looking much better tonight. It really does look like he had a terrible makeup artist last night.

I think this might be Alex's swan song. I think he's friends with the contestants and is having fun with this show.

He is rather playful. If he is about to announce his step down, he had ended with a flourish.

I'm glad the world had been so loud about caring for him. He deserves it for what he has brought to our lives. I wonder if there will be some initiative on the part of all former contestants for him.

Im really surprised James bet such a low amount on that final jeopardy

I am too.

Brad Rutter has been doing poorly, but he's cuter than he's ever been.

Alex is back to purple lips tonight. Perhaps he doesn't wear lipstick and that is the problem. It makes him look ghoulish.
