Also for some southern metal, Mastodon's The Hunter is really growing on me.

Atheist are great. Personally i'd recommend Unquestionable Presence to someone who is looking for some good technical death metal to listen to.

Anyways, i'm not quite sure what the OP meant by "rockish" but i'll throw this out there
