Identifying as Queer vs. Gay

This only goes to show how much gay's are socially behind in terms of actually excepting themselves. I mean, they don't even know how to properly identify themselves. Personally, same shit, different name. People tend to categories way too much. Within the black community you're considered BLACK regardless of your skin tone, it's as simple as that? African American, niggah, black, etc. It's all the same. The same goes with terms like; gay, queer, homosexual, it's all in the same category and has the same exact meaning.

People in this thread have already said it's not the same meaning, that queer is a more all-inclusive term that references sexualities besides gay, and gender identities beyond male/female. So a better comparison might be to say black vs. "people of color." But still, many people (myself included) prefer the specific term for their group, not "people of color."

Well, that's their opinion. Not mine. To me we're all queers at end of the day regardless :) Not saying this to upset, I just simply choose to not separate into different categories. After all, it's a term used differently from mouth to mouth. I'm sure a lot of "straight people" would agree with me - a queer is A queer, meaning GAY, no matter what he calls himself.

Something not nearly as SJW-cringey.

Yeah I get that. I met the transman who came up with the term cis- a few months back for an interview and he told me it was just a joke pretty much. A deaf person asked him (they have a sign for non-deaf people in sign language) what trans- people called "others" and he did not have an answer as at that time the only real thing they had was stupid shit like normal etc. So he thought about what trans- meant in its origin and decided it made sense to go with cis- due to the meanings of the words. I mean it was just kind of word play for him and he had no real intention of making it stick, its just kind of smart enough to hang around in the right groups.

Gay and proud there have been too many of us that were hurt or murdered and the last word they heard was queer or faggot.

I think i would prefer to be identified as gay. Doesn't make much of a difference who I am, what I choose to identify myself as.

Queer to me is rather rude... and pretentious. So I don't think I'll use it to identify myself.

And I feel that it's easier to call yourself queer than gay, because you don't really have to face the fact that you are indeed gay and queer is a more ambiguous term that you can use to let people know you're not straight. Just an opinion though.

"Queer" sounds very in your face, almost harkening back to the confrontational era. If "gay" gets us where we want with the courts and public opinion I say go with it.

This. The word "queer" has only been used negatively in my life and will always be seen that way by me.

But that is just it -- we're not. You may label others, but the entire point of the thread it to ask how we see ourselves. Dismissing everyone else's preferences is simply arrogant.

We're not all kikes, spics, niggers, queers, gooks, dykes, sissies, queens, crackers, or whatever. For those of us who do and can embrace labels that were originally epithets, that is our choice. It does not follow that it is acceptable for others to apply them to us.

How I see myself isn't necessarily gonna change how other people see me. Unfortunately. The majority are still gonna say that both you, I and rest of us are QUEERS (=gay) So I, personally, don't really see the difference between the terms... I just choose to deal with it while you may not (even though I completely understand were you're coming from saying that it isn't acceptable for people to apply words on others). However, whether or not it's appropriate to use these different terms are strictly up to each one of us. No need for you to try to instal moral values saying "this is right" or "this is wrong". Ebony's call themselves "niggers" aaall the time, and some of them don't. That being said, no body of those who disagrees cares enough to actually ban the word, how come? Just because I'm a vegetarian and disagrees with the killing of animals doesn't mean I can go around telling people about themselves or lecturing them saying what they should and shouldn't eat. Some of us have a great amount of self-distance and don't see words like "Queer" as a "hate crime" lol. People need to loosen up a bit and learn to deal with somethings in life.

This. The word "queer" has only been used negatively in my life and will always be seen that way by me.

You know what though, I'm only 23 and the word gay has only been used negatively in my life till recently...

If I am honest on this though I do identify as gay, that is what I am. But I associate more with queer groups than gay - I don't really feel like anyone calls themselves just queer unless they are trying to be edgy. I do feel like I am queer though, but I am queer and gay. Maybe the social sciences has indoctrinated me too much, but it seems strange for people when among other queer people to be bothered by the term. Its all about location upon hearing the word said, but I still hear gay used as an insult by itself enough to teach me that its not perfect.

Same here, though maybe they use the word Queer like some blacks use N*****, Probably all wrap up in queer politics/nation as well.

^ ^ This. I suspect the "queer/n-word" analogy is pretty accurate. Politicized homos are allowed to call themselves "queers" but judgmental straights are not.

Would you explain this a little more, please?

If I were to tell someone I was queer, it would feel like a political statement. Growing up, when someone identified another person as queer, it was the same as calling them a pervert.
