I think that they figured that those left behind would be stonger in dealing with it than they were.

I wish I could have told them before he hung himself that he was so wrong.

Watching the survivors pain for over 40 years and doing whatever we could to alleviate the agony of the son ....so sad.

But at the same time, I understand that his father's mental anguish was so far beyond what anyone could do to alleviate it.

This is what we live with every day for the rest of our lives.

I doubt the method was his inborn choice.

Had he been born and raised in Europe with the same everything else... who knows.

I don't remember the size of gun he used to do it.

It had nothing to do with age.

Or decrepitude.

I am still in the dark about what drove him to do it.

Ever heard of depression, mental impairment..?

People do not kill themselves for a "logical or sentimental reason", just because they are unhappy with their lives or the world around them: it's not always because they are sad about a loss, or because their parents won't let them be gay or become an actor. In the worst cases it may even be because of it all.

Have you ever considered that the reason why some people end up killing themselves might just be because "normal" people can not bear feeling distressed by other people's distress?
Because "professionals" can not be so unless their "patients" do most of the job themselves? Because nobody will actually want to help others unless they can feel superior or detached from that distress they fear to actually face and feel too close to themselves?
 
I don't know why folks suicide. I've had some bad times but offing myself was never a thought. I haven't been to a church in eons (collection plate?)(just charge at the door) but I have read most of the bible eons ago and my impression is suicide is a sin and you're going straight to Hell. But anyway.... whatever.

I've have a couple of friends suddenly off themselves. It's like everything is normal and they get up the next day and kill themselves instead of taking a shower and shaving and getting on with life. No clues about why. You have a friend that seemed happy and then suddenly you go to a funeral.

It's a selfish thing to suddenly pull the plug and never giving anyone a chance to help.
Then again, it might be a selfish thing that folks want to know "why".
