Is this song about a GAY relationship?

Some of the best songs are those that can be interpreted in more than one way. It's weird to see songs that are about one topic really hit home with somebody who thinks it's about something else. Case in point:

I know a ton of people who've said "This song really speaks to me". One said it sums up perfectly how he feels about his father, another said it became "their song" between him and his girlfriend. But the song is actually about attempting to find some sort of common ground with a drug-addicted teenager.

First off, let me say that I think it can work with any taboo relationship, although there are a few that I would say he wouldn't want included in that.

Second, I believe that songs are sometimes worked, with a certain singer and the music that accompanies it, to seem more, and sometimes, albeit rarely, less, then it actually is.

You guys are late as hell, Luther Vandross was gay and several of his songs were about men.

^Notice not one picture of him with a wife or girlfriend?

The industry was respectful to him and no one ever spoke about it. I imagine he must've led a lonely life, I hope he had a lover, loneliness sucks.
