What's with the Amish look? Ugh!

Re: Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman -- what is he on?

it was an act. you can tell he is trying to stop himself from laughing throughout the interview. also, david is trying not to be too obvious too. i think the whole hip hop thing is some kind of hoax or promotion for a movie he is going to do.

Re: Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman -- what is he on?

Dave had the best line, "Joaquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight"
WTF is up with Phoenix, a talented actor with a promising future, he is obviously going through some sort of phase or confusion in his life.
By the way, myself like many others of you have heard his rap, and it's pretty bad. I believe I read he was pretty much booed off the stage.
Come back Joaquin, we miss you here on Earth.

I haven't seen a thread about a Letterman appearance in about a year.

In other words, mission accomplished.

that was pretty entertaining, either way.

I think the guy is depressed...or drugs

Act, or not, it was interesting to watch.

Re: Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman -- what is he on?

WOW. That might have been the most awkward 5 minutes I've ever seen on television! What is that guy on? I don't even particularly care for Letterman, but I felt bad for the guy. It was downhill from the beginning. I can't imagine we'll be seeing him appear on the show again after that, it was just horrible. Entertaining, but totally awkward!

I thought it was funny as hell. So whether it was intended or not it worked as far as television is concerned.

Heard about this on the radio this morning... They made it sound worse than it was.

Dave has an entertaining way of dealing with guests like that, and whether or not it's an act it still gets people talking about his show the next day at the watercooler.

Re: Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman -- what is he on?

I'm sure his publicist isn't going to admit it was an act. Hence the word "publicity".

Re: Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman -- what is he on?

Well I've heard on E! News a couple of times that his brother-in-law Casey Affleck is filming a documentary on him & his choice to become a "rapper".

Also at the premeir of his "last" film - whatever its called with Gweneth Paltrow - that reporters/journalists/interviewers had to sign a release to speak with him. Not very many, if any agreed.

They also mentioned that after the Letterman interview, Phoenix leaned in as to fill Dave in that it was a joke or something

~Of course this is mostly speculation from E! sources - so take it with a grain a salt I guess...still has strong signs of a publicity stunt or a fake-meltdown attempt if you ask me...

Re: Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman -- what is he on?

I think it's an act. I heard that their doing a documentary for this whole hip hop thing he's doing. I heard he wouldn't do the interview unless they were given the release rights for it.

I agree. Casey Affleck (the one filming the documentary) was conveniently there to film Joaquin's brawl with a heckler during a "performance" of his on stage. You can also see a bodyguard goofing off after he goes after the heckler, appearing to not take the situation very seriously

Kinda lame
