My understanding from the earliest days of my childhood was that the phone booth was enclosed to provide complete privacy to the person in there talking. When the open style pay phones came out, I experienced that as the violation of a basic cardinal rule. Of course now people converse loudly in public places on their cell phones, not seeming to care that they're airing their personal and family's dirty laundry for the world to hear.

Of course, phone privacy isn't what it was, regardless of how publicly the phone is used... There are too many ways for some third party to collect data about one...
