On her worst day she's a better vocalist than half of her contemporaries.

Do you REALLY want to make me post a video of her worst performances? That whole "on her worst day she's still better than blah blah blah" argument is such bs Marley. You most certainly haven't seen certain live performances of her on tour (I'm not even talking about the tv shows performances wich, some of them, are cringe worthy already), I'm talking tour performances that, if people hadn't recorded themselves, we wouldn't know about. Like the Adventures of Mimi dvd...that tour stop was one of the WORST nights of her life vocally...it was so effing heavily edited you have no idea (and the dubbed vocals were still awful, ironically)...people recorded some of her live performances that night...shocking! lol


Anyway, her interpretational skills HAVE indeed improved quite a lot since she first started out...in terms of interpretation/intent/feeling (from Mariah) this new version is probably better than the old version. However, she now lacks the technical support to better, well, support her interpretation...wich is why, overall, the older version gets to be better.
I think that she should really REALLY give up at the belting style of singing...her voice can't take it anymore, wich is why she sounds awful these days. If she sings lower and up to her mid range she can sound amazing (take the "You and I" performance, for instance, perfect example) but when starts to belt it's so horrible that it makes my ears bleed a bit. She's not a powerhouse vocalist anymore...she's trying to be something she's not, wich is just fucking her already fucked up vocal chords even more.

Perhaps she re-recorded Hero cuz she's run out of sugary-sweet pop lyrics. Mariah has had some good moments as a songwriter but for the most part her lyrics read like a 13 year old girl's diary. If she plans on continuing a music career, she's going to have no choice but to revamp old songs, do a few covers, and let somebody else pick up the pen.

It's ironic how the older she gets, the more immature her songs and lyrics become.

She was in her teens when she wrote Vanishing and Vision Of Love. She was 20 when she wrote "The Wind", wich is probably the deepest song she's written. You listen to songs like "Petals", "Looking In", "Sunflowers For Alfred Roy", "Outside", "Close My Eyes", "Breakdown" and "The Roof"...and you listen to her more recent music and you're like "Wtf happened to her? Too much cock in her ass or too much coke up her vagina?"

When you compare the current Mariah to most other vocalists in today's music world, she still sounds decent.

When you compare the current Mariah to old-school Mariah, she sounds like complete shit. The contrast is just more noticeable that way, hence the shock that people feel when they realize that she can't belt it out the way she used to.

Anyway, regardless how good Mariah's voice still is or isn't, I have to say that her songs today are complete crap, IMO. For me personally, she hasn't come out with even one song/single in the last 5+ years that comes close to Hero, Fantasy, Without You, Always Be My Baby, etc. Her beats and lyrics suck ass, which really saddens me because there's alot of potential for further greatness -- she just never taps into it.

She's shown occasionally the potential she DOES, or used to have anyway, for greatness. One critic once said that although one can sense a thirst for musical and creative challenges in Mariah she's too dependant on commercial success (it connects with her severe insecurities and need for approval of others, wich she recognizes and admits). I agree with this. It's what has always kept her from blossoming and evolving.

I've never seen her live. I was being a bit cheeky, not literal. You'd be hard pressed though to find a Madonna or Britney vocal that matches anything Mariah could do.

In her defense (though this won't make me popular) female pop artists don't have many options. She's competing with girls half her age who are wearing less and less. I imagine aging as a female pop star is no simple task. I guess she could retire but I think she loves what she does, she could go the musical route but any thread about pop stars in JUB will show that the last thing the record-buying public cares about is music.

If I were here I'd start making authentic music and keep a smaller fan-base rather than compete with Miley Cyrus and Britney for musically illiterate pop fans who have 3-minute attention spans anyway.

Poor Mariah. People have forgotten all about her comeback in 2005 which was one of the biggest in music history. Sigh. I can't imagine what's going to happen with Britney Spears who is about 30 and still makes music best suited for a teen or early 20-something year old pop singer. As usual, you lambies tend to ignore the positive things I said CONSTRUCTIVELY and try to dismiss it by simply calling it "hating" and being bitter. It's an opinion and I'm sticking to it. Don't like what I say, there's an ignore button at your disposal.
I don't take it personally...I just think it's a shame such a vocalist waste her talent the way she is...what I criticize, mainly, is her musical choices. If you didn't understand that then I'm gonna tell ya...you gotta exercise that brain of yours.
