While I understand your point about these three women excessively using high notes, you certainly cannot attribute that to being the main source of their problems. The fact is that there are several factors that lead to the deterioration of one's voice. To compare Chaka, Patti, and Aretha to the three aforementioned women is moot, to a certain extent.
Mariah, Whitney, and Christina have had more rigorous touring schedules than those previous singers of the early days. It's not that they sang as much as they did; it's that they sang so frequently, especially Mariah, without time for their voices to rest. In addition, Whitney and Christina have had pretty bad technique in the usage/execution; in some cases, that's led to the forced sound that they exhibit. In Mariah's case, she has not been consistent with the training of her voice, for live performances within the past three albums.
Of course, the drugs, the drinking, and/or the smoking do these women, excluding Christina as far as I know, no favors either. To say that singing high notes is their main problem is an oversimplification though.
Reba has toured more than both Mariah and Whitney. She was hardly ever off the road from 1985-2000. If I'm inclined to buy an explanation, it's the excellently written one by axioma16!
I love Reba but honestly Whitney and Mariah are better singers. Most people in my country ( Viet Nam) know them Whitney and Mariah than Reba. I never heard her name when I lived there, just Whitney and Mariah. I do love Whitney and Mariah's old songs. Actually, their voices are even better then Madonna(don't get me wrong I love her too) but Whitney is a real singer. Their voices are very high and I love their old songs a lot. I don't buy Whitney's CD any more. Her last album was really bad.My favorite song is: Once moment in time.
^ Right. Mariah whispers, then the backing track kicks in when she goes for the belts or high notes. And its sad when you can't even tell if she's lipsynching anymore. You actually have to STUDY a performance of hers to find out if she is or isn't because she's become such a master at lipping it and has been fooling people (her fans, mainly) for years. That's where alot of my respect was lost for her and her talent. Fraudulent. The only one of the big divas who does all that lipsynching instead of delivering honest, raw and REAL live performances. It shouldn't even have to come to having to study and coming to the conclusion if either she is lipping or singing it totally live, or leaving confused and not totally sure. That's just sad.
Does Reba sing a song: BECAUSE OF U?
Eh...not a fan. And I don't understand why everyone thinks Reba is this vocal goddess of country singing. Martina McBride has always had a much better voice.
Apples and oranges, I suppose.
She's done a duet of the song with Kelly Clarkson.
That's not true. Celine Dion began lipsynching before Mariah did. And don't act like Whitney's never done it 'cause she has...in her very prime actually (in the 80s to be exact)
But Mariah overuse of lipsynching is really frustrating. She could still be amazing, in a different way, if she changed her singing and musical style.
Well, we all know Whitney didn't HAVE to lipsynch those handful of times she did it earlier in her career. And when she did do it, it was usually because the show she was performing on required it -- like mainly overseas shows. But we all know back in the day, Whitney Houston did NOT have to lipsynch ANYTHING. Especially in her prime. Why would she? Her voice was flawless and could do no wrong back in those days.
Also another important thing to note is this: Whitney hasn't built her career on lipsynching like other artists have. She's never built up a reputation as being a lipsyncher. No matter how bad she sounds. She doesn't even like to do it. And no shade or hate, but just sayin..

Overrated? Underrated if anything. She hasn't had a number one single in a years and has only sold like 15 million albums in a 20 year career.
Who cares about 'high notes' when you can sing shit like this live, that 101% of pop stars can't even do these days:

she may have toured more (wich i doubt) but she hasn't had any big world tours like Whitney has. In all fairness, most people outside the US only know Reba for her tv show, not so much as a singer. Country music isn't well known in Europe.
She's yelling? All of her ballads/songs are like that. Apples and oranges, though.
Mind you Reba looks smashing for a 55 y/o.
Reba has toured Europe before. And so what, if I may ask? Does it strain your voice more to sing in Asia than it does in America?
Reba HAS toured more than Whitney because she's been active longer than Whitney, and has had no down years or breaks because of drug addiction.
If you tour the world you deal with hot, cold ect.. and all the jetlags and travelings takes a lot out of you.
But what has te drug addiction to do with it? It's so cheap to bring this up!
It's not cheap to bring that up, because it caused her to stay off the road a while.
