We have a river in Peterborough named 'Otonobee' and is pronounced 'oh-TAH-NAH-bee'. I've heard it pronounced 'ah-tah-NAH-bee' and 'oh-TAH-NAH-BAY'.

I've heard Monaghan Road pronounced 'MAH-NAH-haan' instead of 'MAH-nah-gun'.

Dalhousie Street has come out as 'doll- (or daal) HOW-zee' instead of 'daal-HOO-zee'.

Any mispronunciations by non-locals in your area?

Theres a place in the UK (think the North of England) called Cambois.

You would expect it (I think) to be pronounced Cam-bwaa (as in french) but you actually (apparently) pronounce it Cam-ess!...Weird!

One I love hearing people trying to pronounce are Tignabruach (TIN-A-BREW-ACH... << as in Loch - not ack! It's a Scottish thing, lol)

Usually the best I hear is THAI-NA-BOROUGH :D

Another is Milngavie (MILL-GUY)

Gotta laugh when I get asked how to get to MILL-IN-GAVEE... usually takes a second for the penny to drop

Also - love the way Americans in particular say EDIN-BURROW instead of Edinburgh (EDINBURRA) ;)

Ypsilanti (Ip-seh-lan-tee)
Lahser (Lah-sir)
Mackinac (Mack-eh-naw)

Now I live somewhere where all the placenames are more phonetic, but for me there used to be --
Lemminsta
Woosta
Walthaaaghm
Glossta

And I've never lived there, but what do you people from Saskatchewan think of people why pronounce Regina like "Rijeena" instead of rhyming with "Vagina." If I lived in a town that rhymed with "vagina," I'd never get over it, and I'd try to find ways to penetrate that word into every conversation

Don't know if we've ever had any tourists educated enough to say Montichello instead of Montisello, or Mee-LAN instead of MEYE-l'n, or Muh-DRID instead of MA-drid (with the short a), or LEE-ma instead of LEYE-ma, etc. (not all of these are in Iowa). You do sometimes hear people pronounce the final s in Des Moines, but I think that's dying out.

Being in an area with a rather large Ojibway native population, here are a few places that tourists always mispronounce:

Sheguiandah (sheg-gwee-an-daa)
Zhibaahaasing (Zi-baa-sing, I think)
Wikwemikong (wick-wem-i-kong)

A places nearby to where i live is Gnosall (no-sall) or Brewood (brew-ood)

Well, everybody seems to get my hometown Napanee confused with Napean.
The one I'd really like to know though is a road we came across while driving to California. The sign said Zzyxx Road.

P.S. anyone have a copy of the pic of Ben Bowder and Michael Shanks naked together? If you do please post it.
Probably a fake but it would be so hot to see a movie of them together. (drool !!!!!)*|*

Wow! Now that's a hijack I could never have imagined!! But. . . ohhhhhhh, can I ever imagine it!!!

Now, what was I going to say?

Oh, yeah. Mispronunciations.

It's amazing how many non-Canucks don't pronounce 'Canuck' correctly. (Hint: It rhymes with 'puck' and that other word, not with 'book' or 'spook'. And it certainly doesn't rhyme with 'puke'! )

My Dad and I used to take his boat along the Otonabee every summer. Apparently I always pronounced it wrong.

I now live in Ottawa. There is a community south of here called North Gower. It's pronounced "Gore" (as in "Al Gore"). You can guess how those from away say it.

I can understand some of the places that are mispronounced because of difficult spelling. What's not fair to tourists is to take a normal word and mispronounce it locally just for kicks.

For example: In Austin, there's Manor Rd. Anyone who speaks English would know how to pronounce it, except you'd be wrong. It's "May-nor".

And, I'm still trying to figure out how Bexhar County is pronounced "bear". There's an "x" there. Since when did English develop a "silent x"?

I'm in a German / Pennsylvania Dutch section of PA. There are just too many places to list that are hard for non-locals to get on the first try.

I had a friend pronounce "West Nyack" as "west nuh-YACK".

(It's "west n-EYE-ack").

Speaking of "EYE", all the locals talk about them there "EYE-talians". (You know, Italians).
