Mosquitos - Is there a way to get rid of them?

That's a rough one! The Mosquito has killed more people on earth than any other person, animal that has even existed !

Sincere thanks to all for the advice.

I know you're in Canada, but does your city or town have laws against keeping junk out and visible (like in a front yard, for example) like that? Here in the states, it depends on the individual city or town - most small towns are quite laissez faire about such things, while your more urban and suburban cities and town do have code enforcement laws against keeping such things as useless old tires, or undriveable junker cars out on your property. And if the cities don't get you, the local homeowners' association your house is located in will.

My city is pretty strict about that, but the junk in the neighbour's yard is in a long, narrow area on the side of their house and it's fenced off from the front yard so you can't see it from the street. The only place it can be seen is from the side of my house, if I look over the fence (which isn't hard to do, since the fence is 5' tall).
(I actually wouldn't mind if they stopped cutting down all the saplings that grow there; I'd rather look at a lot of wild Box Elders and Siberian Elms than a blank exterior wall and a bunch of junk :))

Basil is the ideal plant with an aroma that provides protection against mosquitoes...should be placed next to windows, and doors. Basil lasts the full Summer, and is cheap to buy.

A clove, or two of raw garlic eaten daily..with food...is highly effective keeping mosquitoes at a distance..consume in the evening, for maximum benefit...garlic is also a powerful medicine for those with high blood pressure, and tachycardia.

West Nile Virus has been here since 2002, and I'm also allergic to mosquito bites, and I'm only finding out about this now?! Great information! I think I'll plant some basil outdoors in places where I hang out... and I love garlic too, so I could easily handle eating a couple cloves a day! I don't have heart issues... but hey, eating healthy is like preventative maintenance for your body. :)

^On a lighter note the long standing Transylvanian tradition of using raw garlic against the blood sucking habits of vampires ;) is drawn from garlic's effective protection against mosquitoes..not another literary folk tale...

I remember at the pharmacy, I saw these mosquito wristbands.

You wear the wristbands on your wrists, ankles.....and it keeps the mosquitos away.

I think those are special wristbands.......contain chemicals? But they are disposable, so once you wear them, you have to throw them away.

Another one that I saw at the supermarket is this .....toy? It looks like and is shaped like a frog. It is green in colour. You need to put batteries in it. Apparently, it gives out a frog " croaking" sound that will scare mosquitoes away.

The best option is mosquito incense/ coil. You light up the spiral coil.....and the smoke will drive the mosquitos away.

You can goggle and search for these items at maybe.....amazon.com?

Or just get a mosquito net.

Citronella oil on skin.. garlic and parsley eaten.. parrafin on standing water.. and if you keep your aircon/fan blowing they cannot land to bite you as they get blown away.

Over the past few days, with the cray amount of rainfall we've had, word on the street is that this year's mosquito season is going to be the worse in years, if not decades. I'm getting eaten alive at work - I saw mosquitoes that were the size of a small green pea. Seriously.

One thing I'm hearing is eat a ton of jalapenos and garlic - they don't like either. Is there anything else I could either get or do, to help combat these hellspawn? Off spray is kinda iffy - sometimes it works, and other times, the mosquitoes simply don't give a fuck and come after me, anyway, pest repellent be damned.

These damn mosquitoes are mistaking me for an In & Out Burger, and it's getting more than a little irritating. Not to mention itchy.

First, stop using highly scented products such as colognes, aftershave lotions, soaps and deodorants. Get the blandest products you can find. The strongest scents are strong attractants for the little bastards.

Good luck.

Bob

Mosquitos don't bite me. It's been like... at least 30 years since I've had a mosquito bite.

So... be more like me.
I was just in LA for an extended period and didn't see one mosquito---do you even have them out there....it's so freaking dry.
Hate mosquitos they are so worthless in so many ways....other then spreading disease. Use Off and other sprays if I'm outside for a long period of time. I use to have a place on Cape Cod and there would be swarms of them.

I dunno if you get in in the US but Marmite is a good mosquito repellant, apparently

Mosquitoes .. Those little things .. I guess they're sorta rare where I'm at  doubt I saw any more than 10 of them for the entire summer last year (and _maybe_ a half-dozen bites) & that includes plenty of evenings out in the yard (evening from what I hear is prime mosquito time).
Some summers I see maybe a half-dozen total ... Maybe has something to do with the fact its normally so dry here?

Either way they don't really bother me even if they do bite.

I know there has to be videos out there by now, but here are the (original?) lyrics, anyway.

To the melody of 'If you're happy and you know it':

(chorus)
There's a skeeter on my peter
whack it off
There's a skeeter on my peter
whack it off
There's a dozen on my cousin
I can hear the bastard buzzin'
There's a skeeter on my peter
whack it off

I was playing with my
one-eyed trouser worm
When I shot a wad
it blew up in the air
I should have aimed it better
it hit my Irish Setter
while my mom was combing out his hair

(chorus)

She was drivin' down the road
doing a-hundred and ninety nine
and the chain on her motorcycle broke
Well they found her in the grass
with the muffler up her ass
and her titties playing "Dixie"
on the spokes

(chorus)

Whack it off

If anyone is unsuccessful in getting rid of his mosquitoes, Dr. chris sez:

Household ammonia will relieve the itch. (mosquito stuff is an acid, ammonia is a base.) :D
