Most Memorable Sporting Moment?

Although I'm not a sports enthusiast, a friend persuaded me to go the the game when Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's record.
The zeal of the fans was contagious. The moment was one of my favorites.

I'm a nascar fan. It would either have to be Dale Earnhardt winning the Daytona 500, or Dale Jr. winning the next year after his fathers death.

Either of two events in recent years. One, when Mark McGwier broke Roger Maris' home run record, with homer #62 in 1998, and Sammy Sosa gave him a running-and-jumping bear hug. Second, when the high school senior (now a/k/a J-Mac) in Greece (Rocheseter) NY got called into his first varsity basketball-playing ever and started throwing a series of 3-pointers and the crowd went entirely NUTS. Those are the only two sports moments I can remember that affected me to the point of tears.

I am not even that much of a sports fan, and if anything I might follow baseball a little bit (and really nothing much else - though I'll try to watch the Michigan-Ohio State football game in November), and I follow basketball even less, but that J-Mac moment is stuck in my mind forever. I even started a thread about it, and after I post this I might give that other thread a "bump" in case you didn't see it. The link still worked, last time I checked.

The winter of 1980, Lake Placid, NY. Winter Olympics

United States vs USSR gold medal hockey game.

Oh so sweet!!

If it is one I was there for I would say Mark McGwire hitting number 62 over the left field wall at Busch Stadium. If it is one I watched live it would be the Rams 1999-2000 team (The best offensive NFL team ever) winning the superbowl. "We will rally around Kurt Warner and we will play good football!" Can you tell where I grew up? lol

There are plenty of things that I'd like to say it was, but to be truthful it was Kim Clijsters winning the US Open in '05. I know it wasn't that long ago but she's been my favorite tennis player for a long time and it was the first time she won a grand slam.

Red Sox win the World Series:gogirl:

Yeah, I was there for that... but I was cheering for the other team. lol

I was glad for the Sox though. (Just as long as the Cubs never win).

GO CARDS!!!

Jesse Owens wins four Olympic gold medals in 1936 games.

USA Hockey victory over USSR in 1980 games.

Hank Aaron breaks Babe Ruth's record.

Doug Flutie's "Hail Mary" pass to secure BC's win over Miami.

Champions League soccer final 2005 when Liverpool won over AC Milan after being 0:3 behind on half time. It was an amazing game that I will never forget!

AC Milan: Dida, Cafu, Maldini, Stam, Nesta, Gattuso (Rui Costa 112), Seedorf (Serginho 86), Pirlo, Kaka, Shevchenko, Crespo (Tomasson 85).
Subs Not Used: Abbiati, Kaladze, Costacurta, Dhorasoo.

Goals: Maldini 1, Crespo 39, 44. (1:0; 2:0; 3:0)

Liverpool: Dudek, Finnan (Hamann 46), Traore, Hyypia, Carragher, Riise, Gerrard, Luis Garcia, Alonso, Kewell (Smicer 23), Baros (Cisse 85).
Subs Not Used: Carson, Josemi, Nunez, Biscan.

Booked: Carragher, Baros.

Goals: Gerrard 54, Smicer 56, Alonso 59. (1:1; 2:2; 3:3)

Liverpool won 3:2 on pentalties :)

I wasn't watching or even all that aware when it happened, but my hunch is that most of those who watched Wilt Chamberlain score 100 points in one game (and there weren't even 3-pointers yet...) very possibly hold that as their most precious sports moment. I also think of it as the one "professional sports" record most likely never again to be equaled or broken (though Cal Ripken Jr.'s game streak is way the heck up there). That had to be a magical thing to watch - anybody here who did? CAREFUL...you'll be telling us that you're, uh...OLD. ;)

As a sox fan I agree with this but I can even get more specific. Damon's grand slam against the Yankees in game 7. I can only compare that moment to the sublime experience of exhaling after having held your breath for a very long time.

I would have to say the day that my uncle took me to a kansas city royals game and I got to meet Bo Jackson. He is still to this day one of my heroes.

The West Coast Eagles winning the 1992 AFL Grand Final. First non Victorian team to do it and I was there to see it happen! What a weekend it was!!!! (!) (!) (!) (!)

Either the Yankees Bucky Dent's HR in 1978 eliminating the Red Sox or the Yankees Aaron Boone's HR eliminating the Red Sox in 2003. Both very memorable.

Stictly moments plural, I suppose - United winning the treble in 1999

FA Cup winners with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle.
English Premiership Champions, last day victory over Spurs giving United the title by 1 point from Arsenal
Champions League win over Bayern Munich. 1-0 down with 2 minutes left to play. 2-1 up at full time.

That season included
A last minute win over Liverpool in the FA Cup.
Extra time wonder goal winner from Ryan Giggs over Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final reply - after Schmichel saved a last minute Arsenal penalty.
2-0 down after 12 minutes against Juventus in the second leg of the CL semi-final, only to run out 3-2 winners.
Two 3-3 classics against Barcelona in the CL group stages.

Yes indeed BBA. I doubt any European team will ever again achieve so much in one season. At least not until THFC - who paved the way for all these other upstart clubs - again become a force to be reckoned with... ..|

The South African men's 4x100m swimming team taking gold in a new world record time at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004, with the Aussies and Yanks (or Ian Thorp and Michael Phelps, if you like) making up the numbers.

You call that memorable???? I prefer to think of it as forgettable! It was definitely Australia's darkest day in the international sporting arena.

Most Memorable Sporting Moment?
Please, sir, may I be allowed four?

1.) 1980 World Series, Royals v. Phillies---got to attend game 3, still have the ticket stub; George Brett's (minor?) hemorrhoid surgery during the series.

2.) 1980 Olympics, Lake Placid---USA v. USSR---'nuf said!

3.) 1985 World Series, Royals v. Cardinals---George Brett; "Daddy" Bret Saberhagen Series MVP (he became a daddy the night before he pitched in game 7); the "bad" call; Cards pitcher John Tudor punched a fan (the electric kind, in the dugout, cut his hand); Royals win game 7, 11-0!

4.) 2004 Olympics, Rowing---Ukrainian Men's team. Not really a great sporting moment, but a memorable viewing moment!
