They're coming up pretty soon and I've been getting myself in the mood by looking at this site which is predicting who will get the awards as more information comes in.
http://www.thefilmexperience.net/Awards/2008/tally.html

Anyway, I'd like to see some predictions from JUB members who've seen the films (or not, doesn't matter), since I haven't even seen pretty much any of the films myself anyway.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

Sean Penn for Milk - just watched it and loved it - give him the oscar !!

I'm sort of leaning towards Sean getting it too. I think Mickey Rourke in "The Wrestler" might be his biggest competition. I saw one scene (which will probably be used in his nomination video), where the tear rolls down his cheek. It looked like gold! :D

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

I've seen Doubt. I think Meryl Streep and Phillip Seymour Hoffman should win. Great movie. It leaves you guessing on whether it actually happened.
Hoping to see the rest of the movies that might get nominated for an Oscar. a lot of movies out at the same time and not enough time to see them all.And the rest of the year mostly crappy movies.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

This has the potential to be the best Oscars year in ages, but I suspect they'll fuck it up and some piece of shit will end up getting 10 nominations.

If the Best Picture contenders are drawn from these, then it will be worth staying up for: The Wrestler, Milk, Frost/Nixon, The Dark Knight, Gran Torino, WALL E, Revolutionary Road, Changeling, Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

We shall see.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

Here's who I'd like to see get nominated:

Best Actor:
Sean Penn (Milk)
Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler)
Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire)

Best Actress:

Frances McDormand (Burn After Reading)

Best Supporting Actor:

They can either give best actor to homophobe Mickey Rourke for "The Wrestler" or to douchebag Sean Penn for his brilliant portayal of Harvey Milk in "Milk". Brad Pitt also gives one of the best performances of his career in "Benji Button", but I think this year, the Oscar should go to a real 80s teen washed-up has been.

I actually do hope they give it to Brad (though his competition is hot this year), because he's paid his dues much more than Penn (who's already won an Oscar) and Rourke.

Best Actress-Anne Hathaway in "Rachel Getting Married" all the way. I love her to pieces in this movie. No other female actress gave such a raw, magnetic performance in a movie this year the same way Anne did in "Rachel". She is truly the Audrey Hepburn of the new millennium.

I like Anne Hathaway and everything but if Kate Winslet isn't nominated for Best Supporting Actress and only Best Actress I think she should get it because she's way overdue. I'm also a tad sick of them nominating Meryl Streep so much and then sending her home empty-handed (since 1982 in fact), even if she's won twice in her career.

I agree with you on Heath for Dark Knight, and I can't say I have an opinion on Best Supporting Actress.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

Best Actor could be:

SEAN PENN
MICKEY ROURKE
CLINT EASTWOOD
RICHARD JENKINS
FRANK LANGELLA

And I'd be happy with that.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

Kate is sooo overdue she should just get the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress awards, which they're predicting she'll be nominated.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

I actually do hope they give it to Brad (though his competition is hot this year), because he's paid his dues much more than Penn (who's already won an Oscar) and Rourke.

What does past history have to do with anything? Yes, Penn already won one, but does that take away from his performance in 'Milk?' No, it shouldn't. This award should be his, hands down.

And I don't know what 'dues' Brad Pitt has paid, except for giving bad performances in a number of bad movies for the past ten years, but he was awful in Benjamin Button. Under all that makeup and FX, there was nothing there. That movie is this decades 'Forrest Gump,' overrated, overlong, pointless and dull.

I like Anne Hathaway and everything but if Kate Winslet isn't nominated for Best Supporting Actress and only Best Actress I think she should get it because she's way overdue.

She might get nominated for something, but I'd be shocked if she won anything this year. She was disapointing in 'Revolutionary Road' (which was pretty disappointing in general) and 'The Reader' has pretty much dropped off the radar. I love Kate Winslet, but this isn't her year.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

 .........please, I do not mean to be sour grapes (truly I don't) I have always admired & loved viewing "Oscar".........but for some reason I no longer get as excited as I once have.........maybe I'm just having a lousy week (which I am) :( .........

.........although Sean is not one of my most admired performers.........I do hope that Sean is recognized for his portrayal of H.B.M........."really I do" .........

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

Mickey Rourke will win "Best Actor" of the 2009 Oscar Awards.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

I hope Kate Winslett is only nominated for The Reader in the Supporting Category or Revolutionary Road in the Best Actress Category. In Academy history, when an Actress is nominated in both in the same year, the never win either, it splits the vote. And they therefore don't get the number of votes necessary.

Emma Thompson, Sigourney Weaver, And Julianne Moore, have all fallen victim to this.

But it doesnt always work the same way for men. Ask Al Pacino!

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor. He was the only bright spot in that bleary, listless overrated mess they called "The Dark Knight". If it wasn't for his hypnotic interpretation of The Joker, that would have been a complete waste of two and a half hours.

I don't think you and I saw the same movie.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

Heath is basically a lock for Best Supporting Actor I think.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

LOL @ Dicrapio.

Kate might actually get the best supporting actress award, out of all the potential nominees so far, she has the best chance.

But for Best Actress she's up against the tour de force that is Meryl Streep and "surprisingly good" Anne Hathaway. I say that because everyone seems to be so wowed by her in Rachel Getting Married. I knew Anne had let go of her Princess Diary days the minute I saw her performance (which was too small of a role, IMO) in Brokeback Mountain. I remember my friend and I were in the theater and we stopped paying attention to the movie and were just asking ourselves "was that REALLY Anne Hathaway?" I mean we obviously knew it was her because she's in the credits, but no one mentioned her performance in the reviews. Everyone was gushing over Michelle Williams.

Re: The 2009 Academy Awards.

I think Anne Hathaway has a real shot. But yeah, with Meryl Streep, and probably Kate Winslet, Best Actress is competitive as hell this year.
