Seems to me the academy awards should be a celebration of movies from the US...

It really disappoints me that it focused on characters in India,

What I was getting at in the post above was movies like "Love is Beautiful" do you want me to believe that most Americans thought that was the best picture that year? I dont think so... it was basically a foreign movie and I refuse to sit through a movie with subtitles.

Wow, justndav, just wow. Are your for real? First of all, SLUMGDOG focused on "characters in India" because that's where the story takes place. Would you have appreciated it better had it been about American tourists in India? WTF?

Secondly, the Oscars were established to award excellence in the film industry, not just American-made and American-themed movies. If foreign films fit the bill, then why not?

And thirdly, it didn't matter if most Americans didn't think that LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL was the best picture of the year, it only mattered what the Academy thought because they're the ones who vote. And let me just add that I think it's sad that you're depriving yourself of some wonderful/beautiful films just because they're in another language or set in another country. But that's your loss. Stick to your xenophobic movies and viewpoint.

Re: 81st Annual Academy Awards Thread

i think musical score should have gone to desplat, who also wrote the score for "the queen." the music was romantic, dizzying, spellbinding, and mysterious - completely drawing the audience into the melancholy and fantasy of benjamin button's narrative.

it never overpowered the storyline or the acting, but it was integral in eliciting a visceral response to each scene.

i thought last year's best score winner (dario marianelli for atonement) was well deserved (even over desplat, who was up for "the queen" that year). but desplat deserved the win this year.

hearing excerpts immediately takes you back into the film and the story - which is a hallmarks of an effective score.

lyrical, overarching melodies, the interplay between the major and minor in the principal motif throughout the film, the choice of orchestration - all understated but crucial to creating the fairy-tale-like atmosphere evoked throughout the film.

well structured, too, as even in the opener here, desplat includes motifs and little "snippets" of musical phrases that he develops later in the film, to complement the storyline (ie, when the brass/horns come in around 2:00, a preview of a phrase more fully developed when button takes a job on a fishing boat - the horns mimicking a boat's "fog horn" etc)

i'm partial to romantic-era "classical" composers (brahms, schumann, rachmaninoff, etc), so desplat - for me - would've been my pick for best score.

although not desplat's work, i also thought it was great that they used camille saint-saens' spellbinding, dizzying, and richly chromatic "aquarium" in their movie trailers:
