Re: Official 84th Annual Academy Awards Thread

sorry- I think you got your actresses wrong- Streep and Spencer will probably get it...Hoping your actors are right- can't stand Clooney!

I can't stand Clooney either.

As for Streep and Spencer. I don't know. Streep has a very strong year but Iron Lady as a film isn't gaining any traction. And as I mentioned in my comments regarding the Golden Globes in another thread, the last decade has seen the Academy give Best Actress to first time winners. I'd like to see Williams win.

As for Jessica Chastain I just want her to win. She's had such an amazing year and she's so wonderfully watchable in all her roles.

Hugo was failry well panned by critics- don't see this being Martin's year....maybe since it's the Last Potter film, they'll give it a few awards- the franchise deserves it.

How did you arrive at the view that Hugo was panned by the critics? Everything I've heard is that it's been almost universally lauded by critics.

Rotten tomatoes has it at 94% and metacritic has it on 83.

Re: Official 84th Annual Academy Awards Thread

I think Gary was nominated for supporting actor back in the 90s- wasn't he???? ...

No.

Gary Oldman received his first-ever nomination this year. Nearly 25 years ago, he had a potential shot at a 1987 best-actor nod for Prick Up Your Ears. (Vanessa Redgrave won the supporting-actress award from New York Film Critics Circle despite no Academy nod and Olympia Dukakis winning nearly everything else, and eventually the Oscar, for Moonstruck. Also: Oldman's ex-wife is Lesley Manville, who nearly made the 2010 best-actress cut for Another Year. She won from National Board of Review, and director Mike Leigh did receive an Oscar nod in best original screenplay.)

First-time acting nominations for 2011 achievements:

BEST ACTOR
• Demián Bichir
• Jean Dujardin
• Gary Oldman

BEST ACTRESS
• Rooney Mara

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
• Jonah Hill

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
• Bérénice Bejo
• Jessica Chastain
• Melissa McCarthy
• Octavia Spencer

A total of nine [9] are first-time nominees.

Re: Official 84th Annual Academy Awards Thread

I'm sorry, Jonah Hill and "Oscar" shouldn't even be in the same sentence. The idea that he beat out Albert Brooks for "Drive" is stunning to say the least.

Are we really going to be able to keep a straight face when we see the trailers for "21 Jump Street" and the voice-over says, "...and Academy Award nominee Jonah Hill."

I'm also upset that Rooney Mara shut out Tilda Swinton. What gives??? How is Rooney recognized for that role but not Noomi Rapace who originated it? Figures it took some spoilt American brat in an American-remake to bring recognition to the role.

I would hate for George Clooney to win for The Descendants in what was typically another George Clooney playing George Clooney role. I would love to see Jean Dujardin win... but that's not going to happen. George has pretty much swept all the other awards leading up to this.

I think the only true showdown will be between Meryl and Michelle. I'm still unsure as to who will come out on top considering both have been splitting the awards leading up to this. The SAGS will tell all... whoever wins that will pretty much win the Oscar.

I also have to add that this is the WEAKEST supporting actress race I have seen in years. The idea that it could be up between Octavia and Jessica is laughable. When I saw The Help I never for one second thought of Oscar-winning performances, hell even Oscar-NOMINATED performances. It was enjoyable Summer pap. It would be wonderful if Janet McTeer had a chance and actually won... but again, that's not going to happen.

Christopher Plummer is pretty much a shoe-in to win (FINALLY) for what is more of a "body-of-work/sentimental" award, rather than an outstanding performance as it was fairly simple. Now that Albert Brooks is out of the race altogether, I don't think Christopher has anything to worry about.

Best Picture hopefully goes to The Artist. I have seen all of the Best Picture nominees and I personally thought The Artist was the most original and entertaining out of the lot. But who knows what the voters are looking for.. if the Artist loses, I'll be shocked.

Re: Official 84th Annual Academy Awards Thread

Rooney Mara and Naomi Rapace's take on Lissbeth were definitely diferent. I liked both, but there was a different interpretation.

Re: Official 84th Annual Academy Awards Thread

Well, the SAG Awards cast a whole new light on the Best Actress race - Viola Davis walked away with the SAG making, so if history is anything to go by, she's the new favourite for the Oscar.

Jean Dujardin took Best Actor, Octavia Spencer and Christopher Plummer took the supporting SAGs.

Interesting.

Very interesting night indeed.....I think Viola will take the Gold home come Oscar night..I still think George will get Best Actor...

Gary Oldman is such a "force" to be reckoned with could the Academy make him the "Dark knight" of the evening?

Re: Official 84th Annual Academy Awards Thread

I saw The Help and The Iron Lady.

I hope Viola Davis wins, Meryl was wonderful but she already has enough of these things.

I'm looking forward to seeing Glenn Close in 'Albert Nobbs' when it ever gets out there.

Why are there only two songs nominated?

"Iron Lady" is still playing @ my theatre..Is it worth the Admission ticket? I keep hearing Streep is awesome like always but the movie sucks...

Are you sure there's only 2 songs nominated this year?

Re: Official 84th Annual Academy Awards Thread

Only a small minority of SAG members are also members of AMPAS and can vote for the Oscars. It's impossible to say who they voted for in the SAG awards.

However, Viola's SAG award may have a psychological effect on the best Actress Oscar, since most AMPAS members probably haven't sent in their ballots yet.

The movie (Iron Lady) was just okay. I'm a big fan of Meryl Streep but this won't be one of my favorites of hers. She did an amazing job though. I just didn't 'enjoy' it that much.

The Help was much more entertaining and enjoyable. The acting was excellent. I remember Meryl winning the year "Doubt" was out and saying they should give Viola Davis some more parts. She was right.

Octavia was fabulous in her role.
Joan Rivers on Fashion Police said Octavia asked them to let her present on the Globes with Jason Biggs. They asked why him and she said, "So the announcer can say...He stuck his dick in a pie and she took a shit in one...please welcome Jason Biggs and Octavia Spencer."

I thought J. Edgar was dull and boring although Leonardo did an amazing job with the role. I may be a bit biased against it since it pissed me off that Eastwood only "hinted" at the fact that he was gay and had a partner (played by Armie Hammer).

Yes, there are only two songs nominated and I can't find out why.

Re: Official 84th Annual Academy Awards Thread

According to MTV:

So this is how the nominees are determined — with one exception: Best Original Song. In 2009, when the Academy opted to up the number of Best Picture nominees to 10 (the voting body has since altered that number), it also changed the rules for Best Original Song. As Billboard points out, members of the Academy's music branch now "assign each song a numerical score between 1 and 10, and if no song receives an average of more than 8.25, there are no nominees. If only one song tops the threshold, as clearly happened here, the next highest vote getter secures a nomination as well."

This year's Best Original Song category boils down to this: either Bret McKenzie's "Man or Muppet" or "Real in Rio" by songwriting trio Sergio Mendes, Carlinhos Brown and Siedah Garrett secured a score of 8.25 or better, earning a nomination and pulling the #2 vote-getter into the fray. Simply put, members of the music branch didn't award any other song, including John and Gaga's duet "Hello Hello" or Blige's "The Help" track "Living Proof," a score high enough to secure a nomination.

Re: Official 84th Annual Academy Awards Thread

^ Thank you braex

The Academy's music branch must be some breathtakingly pretentious snobs.

Re: Official 84th Annual Academy Awards Thread

Viola was very good- but I don't really see her as a lead character- the Emma Stone character was really the lead....

The story was heavily centered around Emma's character. Viola & Octavia carried the film and made you "believe".

Emma was the lead but she did not give an Oscar-caliber performance.

Re: Official 84th Annual Academy Awards Thread

When I search my name, I always get so many posts from here. XD

But, God, I haven't seen a lot of these nominated films. Last time, I had seen a good chunk, I'm behind this time.

Which is one of the best "Best Picture" nominee ones to start with? Hugo looks promising....
