  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Please can we have a new Science Forum?

Well, depending on what the handcuffs and billy club are used for in the next drawing, it could be a whole different forum...

THA a lot of the wests financial and social problems are because we are living longer due to medical science. With more and more old people for the working population to support there will be no money left to support us when we retire. From the point of view of the State the best scenario would be that we would all die on retirement. If the aging process were to halted we would only be allowed to reproduce to replace those killed through unnatural causes. If we were allowed to continue reproducing at our present rate we would be dieing of starvation through over population. The only other alternative would be compulsory euthanasia. So lets continue to concentrate on improving the quality of the life that we are naturally given.

You know it makes sense. I suspect that our minds couldn't cope with immortality. Life can be a struggle as it is, imagine having to struggle for eternity.

An excellent point well presented :=D:

Blackbeltninja does bring up a good point, however maybe the big stuff can still have topics in the Hot Topics area, and then at the end of the first article (usually a news posting or whatever) can have at the bottom "For discussion, see this thread in the Science Area" or whatever it will be called.

*shrugs* Just an idea!
I like this "shrugs" idea - it would provide, as "Candide" said - "the best of both possible worlds"

A fine idea from a young adult, with merit and intellect - if JD gives the go on it, i shall sign off on it right away.!oops!

Star-warrior seems like a fine candidate for a mod. - what's one infraction? He should not be marked for life because of that - besides don't they vanish after a period of time?

remember tis the local village idiot speaking here so his input may not be of much value in this matter.#-o

I pm'ed Seth, (no reply as of yet) so maybe they're busy on more important stuff.

I've been nominated by Brandon, and seconded by Croynan as a proposed mod. !oops! Thanks guys, but its up to the powers that be. It sounds like a lot of responsibility for one person. I hope there are more of you willing to take a role in this too, as I have a baby on the way - August as it happens. (!) Sleepless nights here we come  moderating might be one way of passing the time  I don't envy them one bit

Sorry about all this, chaps - didn't mean to rain on anyone's parade with my concerns.

In terms of moving the stuff about from HT to Science - I'm not sure how forum software works; does one suppose it can be automated? I mean, we don't want to have to have some poor guy responsible for shifting the stuff and getting moaned at if something gets beyond Page 3 in HT or something. I know I know it may not happen - I just like to be covered for all eventualities.

I must say I am looking rather forward to it. Yes... yes, indeed.

As for starvation, the World currently produces four times more calories than it needs. American farmers produce four times more, but they only sell half of that. Why? Because they want to make a profit no matter what, and refuse to give their crops for free to the starving.

THA

We're not going to allow this sort of ideological tree-hugging hippie crap in our Science forum, are we?

^I live in the 3rd World, where governments would rather starve their people than accept GM maize from the EU in case it contains a gene which will mass-sterilise the population as part of the global plan for domination and oppression.

Seriously.

I was kidding, though - just doing the scientist stereotype of believing that wiping out a few million people to prove a point is not necessarily a bad thing. "Fools! I'll destroy them all!" et cetera.

only mods can nominate people to be mods, i believe, soooo......

dont invest alot of emotions and energy into that idea until you hear from them ;)

Whoa whoa whoa dude, the US, along with every developed nation, gives tons (literally) of free food as humanitarian aid all over the world every year.

It doesn't always get where it's supposed to go, thanks to local corruption or hazardous transportation. But most of it does.

And I'd be really curious to know where you got that four times more calories figure. Sounds like bollocks to me.

EDIT: and by the way, this is the problem I foresee for the proposed science forum, same problem as with most of the forums here and on nearly every other forum on the net: high bullshit to facts ratio. Do we really have enough people here who actually know something about science to make a forum worthwhile?

I exclude myself from that group, naturally, since I have no formal training in science to speak of. (But I do have a pretty good bullshit detector.)

That might be a prized 'asset' in certain "quarters" :p

Well a Science Forum is now being discussed at Mod Towers. Creating new forums is easy enough to do, however, as has already been mentioned, we have to look at whether there is enough of a need and also if we have Mods who can monitor the forum - or if there is someone we feel we can bring onboard.

When we look at the International Politics forum and the Sports Forum, although there was much support for both of them, in reality they haven't really developed as much as was hoped.

From a purely personal point of view, an option would be to either have a new forum with the proviso that if it doesn't get the traffic we anticipated then it is closed and the threads moved to HT,

OR

we incorporate Science into the Tech forum which would become 'Science, Technology & Computers' - and then if the threads warrant their own forum, we could create a new one.

With some of the new site developments that we have in the pipeline, I believe that JUB's traffic will increase significantly and even if there is not enough support for a Science Forum at the moment, I would imagine that there will be in the future.

Any further thoughts are more than welcome.

hey guys

sounds good to me too!!!

count me in. I am marine biologist with MSc in Marine resource management and i am doing a PhD in marine ecotoxicology. Of course i care for the other science subjects too, so let's do it!!!

:D

science hurts

my science teacher make me dance on the ceiling alot

yea thats what he called detention

We seem to be thinking along the same lines. You do have 10 minutes after posting to go back and and add the
science.gif
icon. Perhaps you should bring this thread to the attention of the powers that be or if they acknowledge it perhaps they could post on it to that effect.
Or if you miss the timescale for editing you can of course just do a Post Report and we can edit the title to put the Icon in place! - Just another service we offer!! :D
