  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Please can we have a new Science Forum?

I think there are a few real_science fans here, and me I like it, having been a post-grad in physics. I know Nonimus is an archaeologist in the making, and a few other folks like Croynan loves to post science related topics too.

Please give your support in this thread everyone! ..|

You should be the moderator for it if they decide to make one.

yes please
hopefuly starting post grad study leading to a PhD in chemistry in the next few months

Amen! I seriously hope that happens. Applying to medical school next month #-oand having a scholarly circle to turn to would be greatly appreciated!

we can all sit around and talk until we look like Galileo

stroking our beards saying Indeed

:D

Sounds like a great idea I'm all for it. I used to work in alternative energy and am a science head. It would be great to have a place to exchange ideas.

Hmmm.

Since I am rather becoming in the role of Devil's Advocate... if we move all our Science out of Hot Topics, who will be responsible for the education of the barbarian hordes in there?

I know those without an interest don't look at most topics with a science tag anyway, but if it is far removed and someone isn't a regular in the Science forum, they might miss the few scientific things which do interest them (little green men, Nazi practices resurrected through curing gay sheep and so on). Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, given some of the threads which have gone through HT.

Is it at all possible to start a topic in HT and have it move automatically to the Science forum after 24 hours or so, so it is still visible by the bulk of people in HT for a while? Or is that overkill?

I just think that keeping it in HT will give it a cooler Mythbusters/Men in White/MadLabs science-for-the-people kind of atmosphere to it, while moving it out might end up consigning some of the stuff to the bin. Take the Sports Forum as a f'rinstance - I was almost knocked over by a tumbleweed in there the other day!

On the other hand, of course, it might be nice to avoid some of the rampant panic which accompanies some of the more controversial scientific topics out there.

I like the idea of a science forum, but blackbeltnija makes a good point. Could a SF attract enough traffic?

Blackbeltninja does bring up a good point, however maybe the big stuff can still have topics in the Hot Topics area, and then at the end of the first article (usually a news posting or whatever) can have at the bottom "For discussion, see this thread in the Science Area" or whatever it will be called.

*shrugs* Just an idea!

I had another thought on how this might work. One of the problems of scientific threads on hot topics is that, due to high traffic, they tend to fairly rapidly drift onto the second or 3rd pages and are then, effectively dead before some members have a chance to see them and add to them. If a "hot topics" thread were labeled as
science.gif
once they get to the 3rd page they could be moved by a mod to a science forum, that way no one is deprived of them and they are easier to find for those who have an interest.

What does everybody think?

That is a good point that blackbeltninja makes. Maybe keep iti n HT for 48 hrs, longer even, for the people who don't check in everyday.
Developments in Science can be slow and having a separate science Forum/Archive makes it easier to access a topic when there are new developments further down the track.
Important threads can easily get pushed down the list and, subsequently lost, in HT, as Trawler just said. A Science Forum Mod could keep track of it!

I've posted SCIENCE threads occasionally, but hit the send button too soon, and have forgotten to add the
science.gif
icon. No doubt others may have done this, as I don't know any redress once the thing has been sent off. This may mean that some science threads can be overlooked.

I usually log on whilst most of America, and hence the bulk of the readers here on JUB go to bed. So, threads which are new to (HT) become lost and/or neglected whilst other stuff floats to the top there. If after 24/48 hrs the thread really has lost its momentum in HT, then I would like them to go to a place where others can access them and enjoy the interesting articles members have found easily without having to wade through poop or stink threads to get to them. The Science Forum as Raybee mentions can become an archive.

I think the science forum would benefit by having image functionality, because reading plain text about science stuff can put some folks off. If there were also illustrations demonstrating a point in the post, that'd be great.

I look forward to a response from the great powers that be.

We seem to be thinking along the same lines. You do have 10 minutes after posting to go back and and add the
science.gif
icon. Perhaps you should bring this thread to the attention of the powers that be or if they acknowledge it perhaps they could post on it to that effect.

Sounds great, but I hope I remember to keep checking it. I'm interested in religion, too, but for some reason I keep forgetting to look in on that forum...

But in the meantime, how about about a sizzling hot science thread here in hot topics? Got any ideas? (Anything but global warming or evolution please -- we've done those.)

What's new in archaeology? Have they dug up the bones of the oldest known chav?
