Power. Sex. Betrayal. Love. Rage. Evil. Dragons.
It's a fantasy soap series based on the War of the Roses.
Power. Sex. Betrayal. Love. Rage. Evil. Dragons.
Good Grief, guys.
There are 7 "royal" families (Seven Kingdoms). The premise is that each one wants to "The Iron Throne," which is THE equivalent of the saying in Lord of The Rings: "One ring to rule them all." The families are treacherous - except for one, which was led by Sean Bean (the house of Stark). They plot secretly to gain control of the Iron Throne. And there is one "outsider," a young woman who is immune to fire - literally. She's just a nice girl in the beginning, but her hateful brother would (again, literally) whore her out to 10,000 men if it meant he could get the power to rule.
It's a soap opera, except that That "young woman," Daenerys Targaryen, who had no desire to rule anything (she's a young woman maybe 18), eventually is married to a Barbarian who is later poisoned and dies. In her grief, she steps into the fire in one scene to die alongside her (already dead) husband, and the next morning, she is still alive...along with three small dragons that hatched from eggs. There have been no dragons for 1,000 years, but the eggs were never destroyed (part of the myth). Now, they (the dragons) have been birthed in the fire in which her husband was laid to rest (he was poisoned, and this was his funeral sending-off party!) She is now called "The Mother of Dragons" and they go from being 4" high (but can still breathe fire at that size) into gigantic dragons (but not quite Godzilla-sized!). She can control them (mostly), but you know how dragons are: when they go thru their adolescent phase, they won't obey her and get into minor trouble. But they do love her, as she is the only "mother" they've known, so when they grow out of their "dragon-adolescent-phase," they return to her and do what she asks.
So, now you have sword, Dragons, and, oh yeah, there are also witches and sorcerers and beings who can change their physical appearance (shapeshifter).
OH! And there is a WALL that keeps all the kingdoms separated from a magical kingdom on the other side of that Wall, with beings who are called "White/Night Walkers" (because a they're White, of course!). And THEY have a king, who can reanimate ANY corpse and force it to obey him. And it has been prophesied that he will break thru the wall and overrun the 7 families' turf (and surf), presumably turning everyone into zombies, and he will rule the world. You don't learn about him in the early episodes, but he does show up. The very last scene of the last season was pretty spectacular. He now has control of a dragon, but I won't tell you how. The last season is going to be the human families banding their armies together to fight him off.
EXTREMELY intelligently written (Thank God), almost like Joss Whedon's writing (the First Avengers Movie, but not the *cough*cough* stupidly written "The Infinity Wars" a poorly written movie [had to get that in there, yup, just HAD TO!].
And that's the Truth!
Oh, I forgot The White Walkers haven't been seen for centuries, but there is a chill in the air - along with some sightings - that mean, "we're baaaaccckkkkk." Which spells danger for the humans guarding the wall (called The Night Watch). They're all soldiers who are part of the Seven Families and they are loyal to their commander (whoever that happens to be at the time). So, think of it as a kind of "War of The Worlds" except one party is human and the other parties are magical beings who want to invade the human territories and kill them all.
There, that should cover it. There are mini-plots within all this, because these people are sadists, masochists, and the men even have sex with each other. LOTS of nudity. LOTS OF BLOOD.IN fact, WAAAY more blood spilled than nudity shown. NOT for the squeamish.
