I can't wait to see this movie! The film is based on the book by Leroy F. Aarons, based on the true story of the life and legacy of Bobby Griffith, a young gay man who killed himself due to his mother's and community's religious intolerance.

Upon learning of her teen-aged son Bobby's homosexuality, his devoutly religious Presbyterian mother, Mary Griffith, resolves to "heal" him through prayer. His mother's unacceptance, combined with the intolerance of his community, result in Bobby commiting suicide.

After the death of her son, Mary re-examines the beliefs she has been taught by the Church, and becomes a national crusader for gay and lesbian youth.

Premieres on Lifetime @ 9PM Next Saturday (1/24).

Meh. They've been advertising it so much I almost DON'T want to watch it. But, more than likely I'll see it 17 times...lol
 
It was a good movie

The first time in a while I sat through a whole TV movie.
 
This did look good from the previews but I dont think I can take another tragic gay movie. Hollywood only seems to put money behind a gay story that's about suicide, murder, or AIDS.
 
This movie was great. I'm glad I watched it tonight. Very heartfelt and inspirational story!

I know its true. I saw Sigourney make several appearances to promote it. I think gay people need to find their own solution and not hope straight people understand/accept them. And see more positive stories, fact or fiction, that are not all about dying and tragedy. It would be nice to see gay people be strong, healthy, and empowered by their sexuality not always victims.
 
Oh god, I was a baby during the raining scene (you'll understand when you watch....don't wanna spoil anything).

It was a great movie. I was surprised that my parents were watching the same movie in the other room, haha.
 
This was such a good movie, especially for tv. There were quite a number of times I teared up. Everybody was so good in it. It just breaks my heart how much the family had to lose to actually bring change within the family and their acceptance of gays and lesbians. I am so glad I taped it. Will probably rewatch later this week. I am going to find the book this was based on.

I have watched Prayers for Bobby three times already. The movie is just so good, and I just can't stop watching it!

My mom and I watched it, and she talked to me after the movie saying she doesn’t really agree with it, but she couldn’t drive herself to do what bobby’s mother did to him. The hounding of the scriptures was stressing Bobby, and his mother not accepting his sexuality, which drew him to suicide. Right before Bobby killed himself, do you think he imaged David with another guy coming out the bar, or do you think that was David, and another reason why Bobby killed himself? Before this movie my mom was slowly accepting this, but now she is really accepting it, because she couldn’t see with losing me over this.

I was also wondering if Mary would have ever accepted her son if this tragic situation didn’t happen. I know Bobby loved his mother so much, but I couldn’t kill myself over it, because she didn’t accept it.

I love how he moved in with his cousin, but when he went back home was just a really bad decision. Mary would have suffered it out till she could accept it, and deal with it. I think a lot of it could have been avoided.

That's the worst part about movies based on actual events. No matter how many "if's" run through your head, it will never change the fact that it actually happened, and there is no going back no matter how much we may want. On that same note, it does make more of an impact on viewers than if it was a fictional tale.

I'm currently watching it again *breaks out the Kleenex* :cry:
