How should I reply?

By a PM?

By another comment on the nearest post?

Somewhere sort of closeby in the relevant thread?

I hate questions in my comments.

But I love comments, don't get me wrong.

Step 1: Make a thread asking what to do
Step 2: Send a PM
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit.

:)

Seriously though, I send a PM with their comment /quoted (so they know what I'm talking about) followed up by my response.

I occasionally leave questions in comments as a way to initiate conversation without derailing a thread. I wonder how many people I've annoyed without even realising it?

To answer your question though, I think a PM quoting the comment for context is reasonable. I'd say responding via comment is okay too, but would be more appropriate in response to flirtatious banter than open ended questions, as it's possible that responding to a question with a brief comment will give the impression that you're not particularly interested in conversation.

PMing somebody out of the blue can often feel a little uncomfortable, but if a person asks a question, they shouldn't be surprised when they're given an answer.

PM away.

Before the overhaul it used to be easy to reply to comments via PM - not sure what's changed since. Think the PM link used to be beside the user name in the comment page.

Here's how you should reply to my questions. Stop by my place and leave your clothes outside the door. Then come in for a chat.
