So I was walking home from work today, just strolling down the street with a bunch of other tired commuters, and it begins to rain slightly. Nothing serious, just a few spots here and there, the kind of rain where you'd start questioning the worth of starting your windscreen wipers if you were driving.

And all around me people grab for their umbrellas, in a kind of mundane yet bizarre frenzy that I somehow got wrapped up in, finding myself reaching inside my bag for my own. And as I was putting up my umbrella, shying away from the rain like everyone else on that street, I started to contemplate how utterly strange it is that we feel the need to get out of the rain so badly.

So i put down my umbrella, and walked along in the rain.

And it felt wonderful.

Walking through rain is indeed a great pleasure; although not quite as much fun as skinny-dipping in a pool during a massive downpour.

It's the little things that make it all worthwhile.

^^ Just watch out for lightning. I was SCUBA diving in Lake Michigan once and the lake was getting hit by lightning. It's an interesting feeling!

But I enjoy the rain. If I'm on my way home I don't care about getting wet. However, on the way to work I'd like to stay dry.

I think you have to take a walk in the rain every now and again. For me it's very therapeutic.

I'm one of those who hates to get wet from the rain.
Really, I can't stand a drop of rain on my face.

I arrived at work one day, and just as I got out of my car, it began to rain heavily. I covered and ran for the door, like everyone else.

Later, one of the salesmen (a beautiful guy with a killer smile) came strolling across the street toward our office. It was pouring, and he was very wet by the time he got inside.

I asked him why he didn't run. He smiled and in a kinda sleepy way said, "It's just water, ya know."

Ever since then, I recall those words whenever I am out and the possibility of getting wet occurs. Now I just relax and let the water fall where it will.

^^ If we're lucky, we'll get some rain tomorrow. :)

A few months ago, I was walking into work, and it was raining, not hard, I decided to walk in, I had 3 different company cars stop and asked if I wanted a ride. Some people just don't get walking in the rain!!

It feels good at times, to have something from the sky/heaven to wash away whatever we feel we have on/in us. The worries/problems - just let the rain takes care of the cleaning for a while.

But sometimes, I really need to stay dry.. Can't be in the office for 8 hours with wet clothes, can I?

I agree with your great writing. (And the rain screws up my glasses with all those stupid wet dots!)

Here, only non-locals and the elderly use umbrellas, with a few exceptions, but it hardly ever pours. There's more of a constant drizzle.

I don't think any of you would have appreciated walking in the rain we have had nearly all day in the part of Alaska I live. In the span of 5 minutes, we had nearly a half inch of rain and the wind was blowing it along at 50 MPH. Winds yesterday in Anchorage ranged from 75-100 MPH. Huge storm system with tons of rain. I live well outside the Anchorage area, but we got hit with high winds and the wet stuff big time.

Thank God it is coming up from the south pacific, otherwise if this had been snow, you'd never find any of us.

Hmm, reminds me, will have to check Thomson's Pass and see if they got snow or rain. If snow, bet road to Vadez is closed for a goodly while. The pass gets the most snow a year; 1953- 994.5" Average annual is 551" of snow.

Yeah, it does suck if it's cold biting rain being driven through you by a stiff wind... otherwise, I enjoy the rain a lot.

And I used to hate it when I wore glasses, because it is so crap when you have drops in front of your eyes. I was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too blind to just take them off without the fear of being smacked by a bus or walking into an open manhole or something similar. Contact lenses are such a blessing.

That's the only reason my mom could ever use to stop us swimming in the rain! Makes sense, I suppose.
