Santogold - Best New Artist of 08 (IMO)

You've probably heard a few of her tunes used in various advertisements, and justly so, her hooks and melodies are insanely marketable. She describes her genre as a mix of New Wave, Dub, and Punk, and while she garners comparisons to MIA, make no mistake the only similarities these two share are the fact they're African-American, and push the boundaries as far as what's expected of African-American women in music.

They have a similar vocal style, and are actually friends. I bought Santogold's album, and I definitely enjoy it alot more. Santogold (Santi White) is African-American, M.I.A. is British and of Sri Lankan Tamil descent. They are not both African Americans.

Hope I didn't come off too rudely; I honestly think Santogold is a much better artist and singer. Kudos to you for finding her too

Santogold is teh awesome! I love her voice and genre bending style. American pop needs a shot in the arm. I'm a big fan of MIA too though I think the two are only superficially similar. I hope Santogold gets the success she deserves!

LES Artistes is def the best song released this year, its just sooooo good, my other favorite from her album is You'll find a way. But i do think i love M.I.A. just a tad more.

I'd agree that Santogold is the best new artist of 2008. Her and M.I.A. may seem similar but they are really different. Both are awesome though.

LES Artistes, Shove It, My Superman and Anne are my favorites of hers.

And while it is easy to compare Santi with M.I.A. b/c of their far out there styles, after listening to both of their albums they couldn't be anymore different. Santi, from my observation is going for a more 90's Gwen Stefani/No Doubt rock musical style. Whereas M.I.A.'s style is geared towards trip-hop electronica and club-oriented.

I'm glad someone else picked up on that, the first time i heard you'll find a way i said it sounded so much like No Doubt and my friend looked at me like i was crazy.

I like her...but if I hear another one of her songs used in some stupid freaking ads I might just forget that she ever existed....atleast on my ipod.-deleted-

I think the M.I.A comparison comes from the fact that some of the tracks on Santi's album was produced/co by Switch and Diplo, long time collaborators of M.I.A. She also did some collabs with Santogold. Plus both are fond of fussing electro pop beats with world music.

When I heard Paper Planes was used for The Pineapple Express trailer...I knew something bad will happen. Viral Videos of girls lip synching to it and doing the gun shot motions with their hands. Hate to sound like an elitist but damn...

In terms of who I like better, I'd go with M.I.A. Arular was so fresh and addictive. When it first came out there was nothing like it. The fact she made the entire album (almost) in her own bedroom is nothing short of amazing. She's just awesome!

The BRIT awards panel have awarded Santogold with best and brightest of 2009. The award ceremony is in February
